Information about the Faculty
| Presentation | Presentation of the Faculty The Royal Decree of the 26th March 1936, no. 646 is the date in which the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Perugia was founded. To know more about its origins, we have to go back to December 1860 when, by Decree of the Royal Extraordinary Commissioner for the province of Umbria, the patrimony of the Congregations was transferred to the State Ecclesiastical Fund, with the exception of the patrimony belonging to the Benedictine Fathers of Cassino of San Pietro in Perugia. It was granted to them for their merits in supporting the Patriots during the fighting which culminated in the decisive battle on the 20th June 1859. The concession was temporary and subject to at least three of the monks being alive at that time. Such a condition being determined, the Decree of the 21st January 1892 ruled that “the patrimony of the suppressed Religious House of the Benedictines of Cassino of San Pietro in Perugia was constituted as a moral autonomous Entity, under the direct and exclusive authority of the State and with the denomination of Fondazione per l’Istruzione Agraria (Foundation for the Instruction of Agriculture)”. The existence of the Entity is regulated by a Statute dating back to 1896; in article 1, it provides that the income of the Foundation is used to conserve the monumental and artistic part of the San Pietro Abbey and to maintain an Educational Institute of agriculture in Perugia, aimed at educating the youth in the active and laborious sacred life of the country gentlemen. On the 25th November, the Experimental Agricultural Institute was inaugurated with a ceremony during which a report was given by the Institute’s Director, Senator Faina, and an intervention from the Agricultural Minister, Guicciardini. With the Decree of the 9th December 1900, the students, upon conclusion of their studies, were awarded with a Doctorate, equivalent to that achieved in other similar schools throughout the Kingdom. In 1936, the Royal Decree was finally promulgated, transforming the Institute into the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Perugia. Since its very beginnings, the Faculty's main premises have been located in the ancient Benedictine Abbey, to which new buildings have been added over time. A constant relationship was maintained between the Faculty and the Foundation for Agricultural Instruction, through the use of the agricultural farms of Casalina and S. Apollinare for experimentation and teaching, as well as through the concession of areas for the construction of the boarding school for students and for the botanical garden. The history of the Faculty of Agriculture in Perugia makes it an integral part of the City, reflecting cultural traditions and succeeding in maintaining the constant attention of its citizens over the years, with regard to agricultural activity and to the study of technical and socioeconomic issues related to it. |
