Information about the Faculty
| Presentation | A brief history The official establishment of the Studium Generale, or University of Perugia, came about with official Papal recognition by Pope Clement on the 8th September 1308. During the second half of the 13th Century, courses in Law were organised with the support of the City of Perugia’s authorities. With official Papal recognition, the Studium was organised into Facultates; among those created were Civil and Canon Law. On the 1st August 1318 Pope John XXII, with the issuance of Inter ceteras curas, granted the University the privilege of conferring doctorate titles in Civil and Canon law. Thus the Faculty, later called the Faculty of Law, was born. The University of Perugia quickly gained a reputation as a leader in the Legal Sciences, especially thanks to two prestigious judicial scholars: Bartolo da Sassoferrato and Baldo degli Ubaldi. Their presence created the conditions which then attracted students to Perugia from all over Italy and Europe. Other famed law professors teaching at the University of Perugia were Jacopo da Belviso, Cino da Pistoia, Giovanni di Calcina and the Perugians, Francesco di Odduccio and Lamberto di Gianni. Among the distinguished judicial scholars who have taught at the Faculty during modern times are Antonio Segni, Sergio Panunzio, Angelo Criscuoli, Edoardo Ruffini-Avondo, Giuseppe Ermini, Leonardo Coviello, Pio Fedele, Gugliemo Nocera, Giuliano Amato and Luigi Spaventa. According to the ministerial regulations which have modified the System of Legal Studies, the Faculty of Law has introduced a five-year degree course in Law, a three-year degree course in the Sciences of Legal services, an E-learning course for Court and Administrative Clerks and the Specialisation School for legal professions named after Prof. Lorenzo Migliorini. Students can also carry out Bachelor’s Degree courses in Legal Sciences and the two-year Master’s Degree in Law. |
