Information about the Faculty
| Presentation | Few medical faculties are able to boast a history as old and rich as that of the University of Perugia. The Faculty was established by Pope Clement V in the early 1300s as Facultas medicinae, philosophiae et atrium. During that period, Perugia had one of the most renowned professors of Medical Science, Gentile da Foligno, a 14th Century doctor and scientist, whose writings constituted some of the first medical textbooks, and a figure sought after by all the European universities. In the centuries that followed, Perugia’s School of Medicine had a variety of different experiences as the city was dominated by various Lords, or Signorie, and then as it returned under Papal sovereignty.
Later, under the Napoleonic government, Medical Studies were separated from the other disciplines and a formal Faculty of Medicine was established. After the unification of Italy and especially in the early 1900s, the Faculty entered a period of remarkable growth and development, creating great spaces, research laboratories, and acquiring ever more modern and functional equipment, allowing it to properly confront the challenges of the new century and all its new biomedical discoveries. Beginning in 1923, the clinical departments and scientific institutes of the Faculty of Medicine were gradually transferred to Monteluce (the former 13th Century home of the female Order of St. Clair). In 1936, together with the other degree programmes of the University of Perugia, the Faculty of Medicine was elevated to level “A” status and; therefore, all financial responsibility for its funding was transferred to the national government. During the post-war period, the Faculty continued to develop both in the areas of medical teaching and scientific research. In 1974, the Faculty expanded with the establishment of its Terni Branch marking a phase of university decentralisation in Umbria with new branches in Foligno and Città di Castello. The upcoming completion of the transfer of the Faculty, including its clinics and laboratories, to the more modern and functional medical complex in Sant’Andrea delle Fratte represents the latest challenge for this age-old Faculty for the new millennium. |
