Information about the Faculty

PresentationThe origins of the Veterinary School date back to the 1700s, when the rectorate was established. In 1860 the school was englobed within the School of Medicine, with the name of “School of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery”. With the Royal Decree of the 27th June 1864, the school was separated from that of Medicine. The Veterinary School was further reformed in 1896 and, finally, with the Royal Decree of the 29th October 1925 the School was transformed into a Faculty. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently located just outside the old city walls and is formed by two main groups of buildings. Students have the opportunity to carry out practical activity on farms belonging to or used by the University, and in a Didactic University Veterinary Hospital. An agreement is in place to carry out practical activity in the city abattoir. The Faculty awards the qualification of Graduate in Veterinary Medicine (Master’s degree, Class LM 42, 5 years); also present are the Degree Course in Animal Production (Class L38, 3 years), two post-degree Specialisation Schools (3 years) and numerous Research Doctorates (3 years). The Faculty moreover participates in the Interfaculty Degree Course in Biotechnologies, the Master’s degree course in Medical, Veterinary and Forensic Biotechnological Sciences and collaborates with the Faculty of Agriculture in the creation of a Degree course in Zootechnical Sciences (Class LM86). The teaching staff consists of 21 full professors, 16 associate professors and 31 researchers.
