Information about the Faculty
| Presentation | The Faculty of Economics at the University of Perugia was founded in 1969 and was originally called the “Faculty of Economics and Commerce”, a name deriving from a pre-existing Degree programme that had been offered by the Faculty of Political Science ever since 1939. The Faculty of Political Science was also established relatively recently; in fact, in the main University premises of Perugia its deed dates back to the Royal Decree of the 23rd November 1927. The current Faculty of Economics is a direct heir of this tradition and ever since its founding, its chief aim has been to provide students with basic preparatory courses, so that graduates can work at various specialised levels within Economics and Management fields in both public and private sectors. The Faculty’s Degree courses currently aim to provide students with a versatile basic preparation, which could potentially lead to a wide range of professional opportunities. The educational foundation is constituted by teaching programmes, which can be grouped into four large disciplinary areas: General economic area: this encompasses the disciplines which concern the way in which the economic systems function, State interventions as regulator of the economy and as tax collector and distributor of public expenditure. This area also includes many other specific matters which analyse in depth the typical problems that arise within the main productive sectors, or which analyse economic phenomena with regard to the internalisation of financial activity. Business economics area: this includes the disciplines which study the functioning of the elementary units of the economic system (the enterprises). Such disciplines provide basic tools for organising, managing and controlling the said enterprises. These are linked to further disciplines concerning business economics, marketing, market research, banking economics and real estate markets, business organisation. Law: this area comprises the disciplines which study the framework of regulations within which economic activities are carried out. The area is generally characterised by two large disciplinary sectors. The first concerns the public sector which has as its reference the framework of regulations regarding public institutions; the second studies the institutional and basic aspects of the standards which regulate private-law relations. Mathematics and statistics area: this comprises the disciplines which constitute the basic scientific and technical tools for the disciplines of the economic and business sector. In this context, the fundamental studies are those of general, financial, statistical and data processing mathematical reference. Some disciplines of this group are closely linked to statistics and economics, such as financial statistics and econometrics; others are more directly tied to business disciplines like market analysis, sampling techniques and mathematical models for financial markets. As already indicated, interdisciplinary and complementary perspectives of the teachings which emerge from what has briefly been outlined, are a peculiarity which distinguish the courses of study of the Faculty, and differentiate it from other Faculties in which there are significant disciplinary areas. This makes for a noteworthy cultural and professional integrity, acquired through a propensity to analyse phenomena according to interdisciplinary areas which distinguish the activity of managing complex financial entities. |
