Course content

General Microbiology
A Brief History of Microbiology. Milestones. Microbial evolution. General phylogenetic framework. The structure and cellular organization of microorganisms. The prokaryotic cell. The eukaryotic microbial cell. Genetic structures of organisms. Microbial growth. Growth curve. Arithmetic growth and bioassays. The microbial metabolism. Generation and energy transfer in biological systems. Anaerobic fermentation. Aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Energy production from oxidation of inorganic sources. Bacterial photosynthesis. Autotrophic fixation of carbon dioxide
Development and macromolecular synthesis

Microbial Ecology and Biodiversity
The organism in relation to its environment. Localization and distribution of microorganisms in different natural substrates. Problems of isolation with enrichment and / or selection of microorganisms. Biodiversity and microorganisms. Physiological diversity and adaptation.

Agricultural Microbiology
Hints of wine microbiology. Work on the microbiology of the processes of transformation and preservation of agricultural products. The microbiology of the soil. The constitutive microflora and its location. Carbon cycle (metabolism of carbohydrates, aromatic substances, constituents hydrophobic). Nitrogen Cycle (molecular nitrogen fixing, the ammonization, biological nitrification and denitrification). Cycles of iron, potassium and manganese. Interactions between vegetation and microflora (rhizosphere and root symbiosis). The use of agricultural waste. Preparation and microbiology of artificial manure (compost). The production of methane. Microbiology of hay and silage.

Practical exercises and demonstrations
The techniques of microbiology. Microscopy. Preparation of culture media. Sterilization. Cultivation of microbes. Isolation techniques. Techniques viable count and total direct and indirect.
