Introduction to Genetics. Genotype and phenotype. Concept of species. Organization and trasmission of the genetic material. Nucleic acids. DNA replication.
Cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis and cromosome assortment. RNA transcription. Translation and genetic code. Mutations.
Mendelian Genetics. Dominance. Segregation. Random assortment. Chromosomic theory of heridity. Asscoiation and recombination of linked genes. Genetic maps. Multiple alleles.
Population genetics. Hardy-Weinberg laws. Forces that change frequencies in populations: mutation, natural selection, migration, random mating, population size and genetic drift.
Heterosis and inbreeding.
Genetics of Quantitative traits. Johannsen and East experiments. How do environments affect quantitative traits.
Genetic structure of population.
Biodiversity ane genetic resources. Incompatibility and male sterility. population genetic structure.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student should be able to have basic knowledges on the genetic material, Cell cycle, Mitosis and meiosis, Mendelian genetics. To know and apply the bases of population genetics and of genetics of quantitative traits. Moreover the student should be able to set a breeding program and to identify the genetic and molecular tools to improve his/her breeding method.
