Course content

Theoretical lectures
Basics of the principles of food and their role in animal nutrition.
Chemistry and physiology of food. Utilization of food by animals:
aspects of digestibility and rumen degradability and influencing factors.
Dry matter, Energy and proteins: overview of methods
evaluation. Nutritional requirements and methods of rationing of the main domestic animals.
Characteristics of the main food for cattle. Basics of influence of technical conservation (hay, silage, drying) on food quality.
Elements of animal morphology: body regions, morphological and functional types, coat types.
Principal farming systems in different species and their influence on the environment (ethnography and farming systems). General on cattle. Technological and managerial aspects of buffalo.
Main breeds of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and poultry raised in Italy: differential morphological characteristics, origin and distribution, notes on reproductive and productive performance. Main farming systems, management technologies. Basics of impact of different farming systems on environment, product quality and consumer health.
Practical lessons
Basics of diets for farm animal design: differentiation between dry matter and wet, reading feed tables, reading diet tables for animal of different purpose and category. Simple feeding strategy for some farm animals.
The morpho-functional evaluation of farm animals.
Recognition of differential genetic types of domestic animals examined both with the use of media and in the field. Examples of farming systems, with "in field" study of practical issues and problems relating to species, strains, productive and reproductive parameters and farm technologies with particular concern about relapse of these on environmental issues and food risks.


The aim is to furnish a basic knowledge regarding the animal nutrition (feeding principles, feed evaluation systems).
The aim is to illustrate also main farming systems of bovidae as affected by species, breeds and productive purpose, with special interest regarding the land use.

3. Farming systems as a synthesis of various skills (botany, agronomy, animal husbandry, veterinary, economic, social, etc.).
