Course content

Arboriculture for wood production
Importance, functions, uses and production of the arboriculture for wood production. Phenological, vegetative and productive behaviors of trees in relation to the environment of cultivation. Carbon sequestration due to arboriculture for wood production. Buffer zones. Criteria for selection of wood species depending on their use and climatic conditions in order to achieve also a high environmental and recreational features. Analysis, planning, realization and management of orchard for wood production. Morphological, phenological biological and functional characteristics, propagation, planting (soil preparation, planting distances, pure and mixed planting systems, intercropping, individual or collective protections) and cultural practices (soil management, fertilization, irrigation, training systems and pruning, tree thinning) for the rational management and utilization of main tree species for wood production. Cultural peculiarities of walnut and other species for wood production.
Arboriculture for biomass production
National and EU legislation on biomass Arboriculture. The role of agriculture for energy needs; regional PSR and bioenergy. Main tree biomass crops: cultivation techniques, harvesting, processing and retrieval. S.R.F.. Wood as a source of energy. Native and non-native species: biomass production and preservation of the landscape. Lower calorific value of the main tree species. Agro-energy: perspectives and critical points. Research and development of biomass.

Practical activities
Design of orchards for the wood production (bureaucratic process and project). Propagation, planting and cultivation of tree species for production of wood or biomass for energy and / or materials for the industry. Visit to nurseries and farms with orchards for wood and biomass production.

3. Progettazione di impianti arborei anche nell'ottica di risolvere possibili problemi
4. Individuare il percorso più idoneo per affrontare e risolvere i problemi degli arboreti da legno e da biomassa
5. Osservare e individuare gli elementi caratterizzanti un fenomeno negli arboreti

Course content

Theorical lessons
Economic importance and distribution of fruit tree species. Rules, environmental impact and principles of conventional, integrated and organic cultivation of fruit tree species. Design, establishment and cultural techniques of an orchard in relation to the utilisation of the product and cultivation system (conventional, integrated or organic) for the following fruit species: apple, pear, peach, apricot, plum, cherry, citrus, kiwifruit, olive, grapevine, almond, chestnut, hazelnut, walnut. In particular, for each species the following subjects will be treated: - botanical characteristics, phenology, floral and fruiting biology; - soil and climatic requirements; - choice of the environment, cultivar, pollinator, rootstock, plant type (at the nursery) and tree training system and spacing; - plantation systems; - soil management (tillage, use of herbicides, mulching, green cover); - fertilization of young and adult trees (determination of nutrient requirements of the trees; effects of fertilization on the tree vegetative development and production quantity and quality; fertilizers that can be used and time and modality of distribution); - irrigation (determination of water requirements of the trees; effects of irrigation on the tree vegetative development and production quantity and quality; irrigation systems and timing); - training and production pruning (time, modality and intensity); - fruit harvesting (ripening indexes, time and modality), storage and utilization; - new trends and achievements on cultural techniques, plantation systems and genetic improvement.

Practical lessons
Determination, with different methods, of nutrient and water requirements of the different fruit tree species and set up of a fertililization and irrigation plan. Example of training and production pruning of the different fruit tree species. Design and management of an orchard cultivated according to a conventional, integrated or organic method.

Practical lessons in the field
Examination of different training and management systems applied to orchards of different fruit tree species.

Learning outcomes

Acquirement of knowledge for a rationale cultivation of the main fruit tree species, with particular regard to the systems and techniques able to guarantee the best safeness and quality of the products and the lowest environmental impact. The student will be able to design a new orchard and set up a plan for cultural practices.
