TO KNOW
General Aspects
Brief Plant Pathology history. Disease concept and classification. Symptoms. Generality, infectious process and aggression factors of phytopathogenic viruses, viroids, prokaryotes, fungi and oomycetes. Plant disease resistance. Introduction to epidemiology. Plant disease control: legislative, agronomic, genetic, physical, chemical and biological methods. Plant disease diagnosis.

Specific plant diseases
Symptoms, life cycle, epidemiology and control of the follow diseases: Potato Virus Y, flavescence doree, olive knot, downy and powdery mildews, particularly on grapevine, apple scab, grapevine gray mold, cereal rusts, smuts and bunts, tomato fusarium wilt.

TO KNOW HOW TO DO
Describe symptoms and estimate the incidence and severity of plant diseases. Isolate pathogenic bacteria and fungi from plant samples. Using the optical microscope for observation of fungal structures and recognize the main fungal genus. Inoculate plants with viruses, bacteria and fungi. Set up plant disease diagnosis.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students must:
To Know: the main causes of plant disease; infectious process and the epidemiology of viruses, viroids, prokaryotes, fungi and oomycetes; how pathogens attack the plants; how plants defend themselves,; how to control plant diseases; symptoms, life cycle, epidemiology and control of some viral, bacterial and fungal diseases.
To Know how to do: plant disease symptom description; plant disease diagnosis.

The importance and diversty of insects. External anatomy. Internal anatomy and physiology. Sensory systems and behaviour. Reproduction. Insect development and life histories. Diffusion of the species. Population Dynamics. Chemical and biological control, Integrated pest management.
Diversion, stability and succession in insect communites. Systematic notes. Biology of principal insect pest in some agroecosystems.
Pollinator's biology.
Pratical work
