Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning
To be admitted to the master’s degree program applicants must have a three-year or four-year university degree or another degree attained abroad and recognized as equivalent, and with a mark equal to or greater than 100/110. In the case of a lower mark, the applicant will have to sustain one or more written exams and/or an oral discussion of the disciplines comprised in the degree program. The Council will then make its decision to admit or not to admit the applicant on the basis of the results of this discussion and a careful evaluation of the applicant’s previous academic career. In the case of students coming from degree programs other than Philosophy, the Council shall determine the possible equivalence of credits or degrees awarded in disciplines different from but in any case congruent with the academic objectives of the degree program.
In order to enroll in the program students must have completed 90 curricular credits (ECTS credits) in the following disciplines: Philosophy (from M-FIL/01 to M-FIL/08); Political Philosophy (SPS/01); Philosophy of Science (M-STO/05); Pedagogy (M-PED/01; Psychology (M-PSI/01). These 90 ECTS credits must include at least 12 in M-FIL/01, 12 in M-FIL/06, and 12 in M-FIL/03.
Profile of the programme
The master’s degree program in the Philosophy and Ethics of Relationships aims to train graduates with an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and methodological instruments of philosophical studies.
Qualification requirements and regulations
The degree program in philosophy covers 2 years during which students must acquire 120 credits (ECTS credits). The academic year is divided into 2 semesters and teaching activities may consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, internships, and the comprehensive final exam. Each student’s individual study plan is designed at the outset and adjusted throughout the term of the program by the staff of the didactic secretariat and assigned tutors (students in research doctorate programs of department researchers). The final comprehensive exam, for the award of the master’s degree, consists in the elaboration and discussion of a thesis on a subject chosen by the candidate.
The preparation and discussion of the thesis are worth 24 ECTS credits. The degree thesis must have as its subject a specific philosophical topic or an in-depth and detailed analysis of characteristic aspects of the work of a particular author. The thesis must be original and reflect the use of an adequate bibliography, aimed at presenting the argument in critical-analytical terms.
Key learning outcomes
Philosophy graduates acquire good basic training in philosophical studies with reference to various specific fields of research (epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, linguistics, logic, pedagogy, religion, politics, history, theory); a general knowledge of the historical evolution of philosophical thought; an appreciable capacity to understand the fundamental questions of philosophical argument as a grounding for his own future personal theoretical work; an understanding of the philosophical-hermneutical dimension of the relationships among the various traditions, with special emphasis on religion, culture, and language; the capacity to interpret problems of communication in various life contexts in both substantive and ethical terms; the instruments for aesthetic reflection in order to contribute to the further public understanding of the various forms of artistic expression; essential knowledge of contemporary ethical, pedagogical, political, juridical, and sociological problems, with particular emphasis on the nexus between philosophy and the psico-pedagogical, juridical, medical, biological, ecological, economic and, generally, the socio-scientific disciplines.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Exams for individual courses are oral exams before a commission of at least two faculty members. Other possible forms of evaluation (e.g. written exams, final or mid-term, seminar presentations) appear in the descriptions for individual courses. Exams for individual courses are marked on a thirty point scale and, where appropriate, the attribution of honors. The final mark for the degree is based on the results for single exams and the final comprehensive exam which includes the presentation of a written thesis and its discussion before a commission of 11 members of the faculty and is expressed in a 110 point scale and, where appropriate, the attribution of honors.
Graduation requirements
The degree is awarded upon the acquisition of 120 credits (ECTS credits) and the approval of the written thesis.
Mode of study (full-time, part-time, e-learning, ...)
Full-time enrollment and regular attendance is recommended. However, part-time enrollment is permitted, attendance is not obligatory, and students can choose the exam session in which to sit the exam.
Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
Among the various occupational and professional opportunities we would like to emphasize teaching (providing the graduate has sustained the necessary state exams) History and Philosophy in Classical and Scientific Secondary Schools (class 37/A) and Humanities in the Pedagogical Secondary School (class 36/A). Graduates of the Philosophy and Ethics of Relationships degree program may assume responsibilities of cultural consultation and management in the culture industry and in cultural institutions, as well as in those sectors requiring specific skills of organization, analysis, planning and team work. Graduates are suited, therefore, to professional positions in the service agencies, in the training and management of human resources in both public and private sectors, in libraries and publishing houses, and in the cultural affairs departments of national, regional, and local governments.
Access to further studies
Access to research doctorates in the humanities and training internships for teachers.
