Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

The program is open admission. The basic preparation necessary for access to the degree program in the Humanities is usually acquired through a secondary school diploma in Italy or another equivalent diploma attained abroad and recognized as suitable.
Orientation exams are held at the start of each academic year and, in case of a negative outcome, semester-long remedial courses will be activated. Students coming from other degree programs of the Università degli Studi di Perugia or other universities must have their previous academic careers evaluated. The degree program Council will decide whether to recognize the credits attained. Students coming from non-Italian universities may also have their ECTS credits recognized, taking into account the hours of classroom teaching and the student’s work load of individual study. Credits may also be recognized for other educational and training activities performed by the student outside of university structures during the university period, provided such activities are coherent with the objectives of the degree program.

Profile of the programme

The degree program in the Humanities is designed to provide basic post-secondary level knowledge
of the historical, linguistic and literary development of European culture and
civilization and those related to it in space and time, from the age of
antiquity to the contemporary era, with particular attention to the study of
original language sources in the respective disciplinary fields.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The degree program is divided into two curricula: 1. Classical; 2. Modern. It is a 3-year program. To be awarded the degree students must acquire 180 credits (ECTS credits). The average
academic year work load is 60 credits. Each credit corresponds to an overall
student time commitment of 25 hours, distributed as follows: 6 hours of
classroom learning and 19 hours of individual study. The estimated student’s
time commitment for the degree program is 4,500 hours. The teaching and
learning activities are divided into semesters. The normal duration of the program
for attainment of the degree is 3 years. To be awarded the final degree
students must have acquired 180 credits (ECTS credits) including the credits assigned
for the final comprehensive examination and knowledge of a foreign language used
in the European Union. Students can insert into their study plan up to 36 ECTS credits
over and above those established by the program regulations. The extra ECTS credits
will be calculated as part of the student’s final average mark. The teaching
and learning activities may consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, and other
forms of activity approved by the Degree Program Council. Where necessary,
individual or classroom tutoring, including computer-assisted learning, will be
made available. All of the rules regarding the organization and management of
the study path for the degree program in Letters are described in the
university teaching regulations (regolamento didattico).

Key learning outcomes

Humanities graduates will have acquired a solid grounding in the historical, linguistic
and literary development of European culture and civilization and those related
to it in space and time, from the age of antiquity to the contemporary era, and
the skills needed to read the original language sources related to each field
of inquiry. Verification of knowledge of a European Union foreign language
(3 ECTS credits) must be obtained from the University Language Center (Cengro
Linguistico d’Ateneo, CLA) within the first year of the program and must be
equivalent to the B1 level for English and the A2 level for other languages. More
advanced levels may be acquired by attending courses at the CLA and official
foreign language courses of the degree program in foreign languages. Such
courses will be recognized for up to 6 ECTS credits included in the category of
“Further language and/or computer skills.” Students must pass the suitability
test for computer and bibliographical skills in relation to the humanities. The
suitable level of computer skills will be the equivalent to the first level ECDL.
Verification of suitability will be performed by the Interfaculty Computer
Science Lab. Suitability must be attained prior to submission of the request
for award of the program degree.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

For the purpose of evaluating student performance teachers may use written essay exams and/or objective tests, oral exams, discussion of student work products, the critical examination of texts. Teachers may provide for periodic in-course exams for students attending the classes on a regular basis, which exams will be divided into modules. Marks are expressed on a thirty point scale.

Graduation requirements

Students having acquired all the credits assigned through individual course exams will be
admitted to the final comprehensive exam. The final comprehensive exam for the
award of the degree is worth 9 ECTS credits and consists in the elaboration and subsequent
discussion, before a commission composed of 5 members plus two auxiliaries, of
an original thesis (about 40 pages in length) written on a subject agreed upon
by a teacher-supervisor and the student within the ambit of one of the courses
for which the student has passed the exam during his career in the program. The mark attributed to the final exam is expressed on a 110 point scale (110/110) with the possible attribution of honors, to be conferred upon the unanimous vote of the commission. The calculation of the final mark is made on the basis of the
average mark for all exams expressed on a 110 point scale and by the mark
attributed to the oral presentation before the commission which mark cannot be
in excess of 5 points.

Mode of study (full-time, part-time, e-learning, ...)

Full-time enrollment and regular attendance is recommended. The student handbook (Manifesto degli Studi) provides for part-time enrollment with reduced tuition fees and reduced annual work load.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
