Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Students wishing to enroll in the degree program must have a secondary school diploma or another equivalent diploma attained abroad and recognized as suitable. Required academic preparation includes, therefore, a good knowledge of the principal authors and main currents of the history of philosophy and particularly western philosophy, a basic knowledge of history in its essential lines of development and events that have shaped it, and a solid proficiency in the written and oral use of the Italian language.

Profile of the programme

The degree program in philosophy aims to train graduates with a solid preparation in the fundamentals of the philosophical disciplines.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The degree program in philosophy covers 3 years during which students must acquire 180 credits (ECTS credits). The academic year is divided into 2 semesters and teaching activities may consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, internships, and the final exam.
Each student’s individual study plan is designed at the outset and adjusted throughout the term of the program by the staff of the didactic secretariat and assigned tutors (students in research doctorate programs of department researchers).

Key learning outcomes

Philosophy graduates acquire good basic training in philosophical studies with reference to various specific fields of research (epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, linguistics, logic, pedagogy, religion, politics, history, theory). Graduates acquire, therefore, theoretical and methodological skills, refined in accordance with the different approaches of the various sectors of philosophical studies, with direct knowledge of original language texts. Moreover, philosophy graduates acquire analytical skills in issues of applied ethics (bioethics, environmental ethics, ethics in education, business ethics, ethics in the workplace, ethics and politics, economics and ethics, ethics in communication). Philosophy graduates also acquire computer and telecommunications skills to be used in their specific fields of research and for information management. Graduates will also have a good knowledge of a foreign language used in the European Union for use in their particular field of inquiry as well as for general communication.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Exams for individual courses are oral exams before a commission of at least two faculty
members. Other possible forms of evaluation (e.g. written exams, final or mid-term, seminar presentations) appear in the descriptions for individual courses. Exams for individual courses are marked on a thirty point scale and, where appropriate, the attribution of honors. The final mark for the degree is based on the results for single exams and the final comprehensive exam which includes the presentation of a written thesis and its discussion before a commission of at least 5 teachers and 2 auxiliary members, and is expressed in a 110 point scale and, where appropriate, the attribution of honors.

Graduation requirements

The program degree is awarded upon completion of 180 credits and approval of the written thesis.

Mode of study (full-time, part-time, e-learning, ...)

Full-time enrollment and regular attendance is recommended. However, part-time enrollment is permitted, attendance is not obligatory, and students can choose the exam session in which to sit the exam.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Professional opportunities for graduates are in the fields of teaching, government, and services for private enterprise. With regard to teaching, graduates can enroll in master degree programs for the teaching of History and Philosophy in the Classical and Scientific Secondary Schools (class 37/a) and Humanities in Pedagogy Schools (class 36/a), by sitting for the entrance exams for their respective programs. With regard to public employment, graduates can participate in civil service exams for the public administration, in public libraries, etc., collaborate with social service agencies and offices for the promotion of cultural activities. Graduates can also work as mid-level professionals in public and private agencies operating in sectors such as communication, publishing, journalism, and human resource training and utilization. In the private sector, graduates can find employment in the culture and tourism industry, as well as in cultural institutions engaged in training, cultural promotion, and communications, and the analysis of social and anthropological megatrends. Graduates can also find employment in private and public agencies in the field of information management and communications, personnel management, cultural heritage conservation and enhancement. Other employment opportunities include positions as collaborators or consultants on projects in the third sector or intercultural communication programs.

Access to further studies

The degree in philosophy meets the requirements for admission to the subsequent Master’s Degree in Philosophy and Ethics of Relationships.
