Profile of the programme

The Degree Program in Business Economics is in the category of University degrees in the Science of Economics and Business Management (class L-18). It is designed to provide the students with the methodology of analysis and critical interpretation of the structures and workings of businesses and companies through the acquisition of a thorough knowledge of business practices as well as economics, law, mathematics and statistics.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The degree program in BE is a 3 year 180 credit course of studies. The program is based primarily on the following subjects: Business Economics (SECS-P/07) and Economics and Management of Enterprises (SECS-P/08). Additional subjects in the area of businesses and enterprises deal mainly with finance, such as Economics of Finance Intermediaries (SECS-P/11) and Business Finance (SECS-P/09). The basic course of General Mathematics of the 1st. year is followed by Financial Mathematics (extremely important subject for the complete education of the L-18 graduate) and Statistics. This latter is fundamental for a well-rounded education in the field of economics and for the instruments needed for quantitative analysis.

The above mentioned quantitative methodologies can be profitably applied in another branch of the program – economics, in which Microeconomics (1st. year) is followed by the equally important course in Macroeconomics and Public Economics as well as Industrial Economics ( very important material for the socio-economic context of Terni). Finally, the student is offered a thorough education in legal subjects. These include Institutions of Public Law, Institutions of Private Law, as well as Commercial Law. This latter is of fundamental importance for employment opportunities in the professions and business.

The degree course does not provide for curricula.

All details regarding the organization and conduct of the Degree Program are available in the Didactic Regulations found on the Faculty’s website.

Key learning outcomes

The BE graduates are able to analyze and comprehend various business problems and to find solutions thanks to their competence in economics, business, law and mathematics/statistics.

The constant balance of the different disciplines between theoretical content and technical/professional content allow graduates to apply their knowledge to a large number of situations that concern companies. These abilities are further reinforced by the knowledge of the English language (B1 level) and basic computer skills.

Through the maturation of abilities in several basic areas regarding the structure and functioning of companies the students will be able to better evaluate the economic, managerial, and strategic problems in question. Consequently, the theoretical, methodological and technical know-how acquired, as well as the interdisciplinary character of the program provide the graduate in Business Economics with the necessary instruments to make autonomous evaluations.

Furthermore, the BE graduate will have acquired a highly qualified communicative competence which will permit him or her to interact effectively in one-on-one and team work situations in a variety of business models and in diverse working environments. In order to enhance the learning experience, not only will the thesis be discussed during the final exam, but also many courses will include group and individual discussions and presentations of case studies, as well as research projects carried out in the academic environment. The student will also develop an ability to interact in an international context thanks to experiences acquired in the Erasmus program.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

The professors will use written/oral exams in order to ascertain the students’ level of progress. A final grade with a maximum of 30 points, and relative to the number of credits for each course, will be assigned upon completion of the exam. Other tests included in the study plan will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. In order to obtain the Degree the student will present and discuss a written report of a theoretical and practical nature following the editing standards indicated on the website. The final grade will be assigned during a public session of the Degree Exam Commission. The Commission is composed of at least seven members and two substitutes and is chaired by a full professor nominated by the Rector. The Commission may take into account the previous judgement of a limited Commission of three professors in the Degree Course who have expressed an evaluation of the student’s discussion of the report. The limited Commission includes the Advising Professor who assisted the candidate in preparation of the final exam. The Degree is granted with a final grade with a maximum of 100 percentile points. This grade is based on the grade point average of the exams evaluated in relation to the credits for each exam with the addition of the final grade expressed by the Commission.

The Degree Commission may grant a maximum of three percentage points to the final report, and if unanimous the designation cum laude.
