Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Students wishing to enroll in the degree program in Kinesiology and Sport Science (KSS) must have a diploma from a Secondary Educational Institute of II Level, an equivalent diploma or an equivalent diploma attained abroad and recognized as suitable. Enrollment in the Degree program is open to a limited number of candidates: (a total of 220 places available; 200 to EU students; 20 places available to non-EU students, 10 of which reserved for students from the P.R.C. in the Marco Polo contingent) Admission to the Degree program is subject to the successful outcome of a written test consisting of multiple choice questions in the following subjects: general knowledge and logic, biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics.

Profile of the programme

The Degree Program is designed to provide graduates with a solid wide-ranging scientific preparation in the interdisciplinary knowledge which is characteristic of kinesiology. In particular, graduates must be able to demonstrate independent judgement relating to the utility and specific method of application of programs of physical and sport activities. This must be done in light of the potential risks and benefits for every individual subject. The students’ capacity for exercising independent judgement will be evaluated on the basis of their ability to work on ones own or in a group, as demonstrated during the internship and during the preparation for the final exam.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The course is organized on a semester basis and instruction is offered through frontal lessons, exercises, practical and seminar activities, internship and the final exam. The duration of the program is three years and takes place in the School of Medicine and Surgery and the School of Education. The students must obtain a total of 180 credits [ECTS credits]. Attendance is mandatory for 75% of every course. Professional athletes will have reduced attendance requirements (50% for every course) upon presentation of documents attesting to their professional obligations.

Key learning outcomes

The graduates in Kinesiology and Sport Science will acquire specific knowledge in the following areas: structural and functional characteristics of the human body in motion; the biochemical basis of the function of the human body and the changing biochemical parameters following physical activity during both competitive and non competitive activity, with regard to the varied conditions of gender and age; the biomechanical principles of movement as they evolve and change in men and women in the various age groups; the principles of measurement and evaluation of the psycho-physiological parameters regarding human movement in individuals participating in competitive sports as well as those who perform non competitive leisure and preventive activities; the bases of psychological functioning on the individual and group level and the neuropsychological conditioning that may interfere with the ability to move; the characteristics and mechanisms of the actions of the principal pharmacological substances in the kinesological-sport environment, including those for improvement of athletic performance and in the therapy for sports related injuries; the phisiopathological bases of the principal non-communicable illnesses; the biological, pharmacological, legal, forensic-medical and ethical principles concerning the phenomenon of doping; the relationship between development, aggressiveness, movement and competition; the relationship between sports, athletics and crime, whether organized or individual, with emphasis on the potential for prevention through athletic activity of individual and group deviant behaviour in young people and adults; performance models, physical preparation and training for the major individual and group sports; a EU language other than Italian; specific methods of inquiry in the various fields that characterize kinesiology, from those used in the area of psycho-pedagogy to those pertaining to epidemiology as well as those used for measurement of performance; computer use for elaborating and communicating data.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Oral exams are conducted before a commission of at least two professors during the normal exam sessions (winter, summer and autumn). There are no lessons during exam sessions. Other possible testing methods may be employed (e.g. written exams, final or during the course) at the discretion of the individual professor. The exams for single subjects are marked on the basis of 30 points with possible laude.

Other than the above-mentioned exam sessions, additional sessions will take place in January, March, May and October for students who have not completed exams on schedule or for working students. These sessions may take place during the period of regular lessons.

Graduation requirements

The degree is granted upon completion of 180 credits. The final grade is based on the results obtained in the single courses and on the final exam which consists in the presentation of a written report and a discussion of the same before a degree commission of at least seven professors. The final grade is in 100 percentile points with a possible cum laude.

Mode of study (full-time, part-time, e-learning, ...)

Mandatory and full time attendance is required for the Degree program in Kinesiology and Sport Science.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples

Graduates in Kinesiology and Sport Science can find employment as Kinesiology and Sports Professionals in the public and private sectors, in athletic organizations and recreational associations and social clubs. They will be able to carry out activities of leading, managing and evaluating individual and group athletic activities. Such activities may be for special needs, educational, leisure-recreational, athletic, or designed to maintain psycho-physical wellbeing through an active life style. Graduates may also conduct, manage and evaluate activities of individual and group fitness.

Access to further studies

The Degree Program in KSS provides the necessary preparation for enrollment in an Advanced Degree Program in the Science and Techniques of Preventive and Adapted Kinesiology (LM-67); Science and Techniques of Sport Activities (LM-68); Organization and Management of Services for Sports and Human Movement (LM-47); Teacher’s Qualifying Course for teaching in first level secondary schools A030 (Kinesiology and Sport Science). The knowledge and skills learned in the Degree Program will also allow graduates to enroll in I Level Masters programs in Italy and abroad.
