Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Students who intend to enrol on the Master’s Degree Programme in SANU must have a University degree or a three-year University Degree or Diploma or another recognizable qualification awarded abroad.

Admission prerequisites require at least 100 ECTS credits in scientific fundamental and characterizing courses as specified in the Academic Regulations of the degree course available on the Faculty’s website.

Verification of the student’s adequate preparation, after the above-mentioned curricular requirements have been met, is carried out by a special board appointed by the Degree Course Council. Personal preparation is automatically assessed for undergraduates having a 3-year bachelor’s Degree and with a degree grade equal to or greater than 100/110 or with an academic career average of at least 27/30. In case of successful verification, the applicant may complete enrollment to the Degree course within the time specified in the Academic Regulations of the University and that of the study programme. In the event that previous testing highlighted deficiencies with respect to the requirements, the applicant must, before formalizing the enrollment, demonstrate to have overcome deficiencies, as prescribed in the Academic Regulations of the course.

Profile of the programme

The Master’s Degree course (CdLM) in SANU aims to train experts with a solid multidisciplinary scientific

background who have the necessary professional knowledge to competently undertake activities which aim at the proper implementation of food, nutrition and related regulations by using new technologies applied to food and human nutrition. They will have the capabilities to interpret data in order to assess nutritional quality, safety and suitability of food for human consumption, malnutrition in excess or in defect, of individuals and populations.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The Master’s Degree course in SANU has a duration of two years, during which the student must acquire 120 ECTS credits. Training activities are organized on a semester basis and developed through lectures, tutorials, practical work, seminars and a final examination. All aspects concerning organization and management of the Degree course are described in the Academic Regulations, available on the Faculty of Pharmacy’s website.

Key learning outcomes

The Master’s Degree course aims at training graduates who, through the use of appropriate methods and techniques, those part of the skills and knowledge acquired during the formation process, are able to: work independently, taking project and structure  responsibility, in the areas of food and human nutrition; assess the nutritional characteristics of foods and analyze the bioavailability of the nutrients in food and food supplements; characterize and monitor food products, including market niches, assess safety and suitability for human consumption; collaborate in study programs dealing with the relationship between food intake and health status, including nutritional surveillance of trends of the population; evaluate the nutritional status of populations, specific groups within and individuals; manage businesses and consulting companies in the field of human nutrition; work in accreditation procedures and monitoring of laboratories and health care facilities, with regard to the preparation, storage and distribution of food; participate in formative, educational, dissemination and publication activities in terms of food quality and safety.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

Learning assessment is through oral and/or written exams carried out before a board of at least two professors. Other assessment methods (e.g. ongoing evaluations, seminar presentations) may be found in individual course descriptions. Exams are assessed on a scale of 30, and where appropriate, with honours. The final mark is based on the outcome of each course and on the final examination. The latter includes the submission, in writing, of a research thesis and its discussion, before a board of at least 7 professors. The final grade is on a scale of 110, and where appropriate, with honours.

Graduation requirements

The final qualification is obtained after completion of 120 ECTS credits and upon passing the final examination, which includes the discussion of the thesis.

Full time study is suggested; attendance is normally requested.
