Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning
For enrolment in the Master’s Degree course, students must have a bachelor’s degree and have obtained at least 60 credits in the following disciplinary sectors: IUS/09, M – STO/04, SECS – P/01, M – PSI/05, M – DEA/01, SPS/04, SPS/07, SPS/08, SPS/11, SPS/12, SECS – S/01, SECS – S/05.
For the curriculum in Sociology, students must have at least 9 credits in the disciplinary sector SPS/07. Furthermore, it is necessary to have at least 6 credits in a disciplinary sector corresponding to a language of the European Union.
Students who intend to enrol in the curriculum of Social Policies must have at least 6 credits obtained through internships and stages (which involves operating in enterprises and public and private bodies, in the social – health and administrative fields, with an active participation and with the relevant training).
Furthermore, students must have obtained the degree with a grade of 90/110 or more. Those who obtained a lower grade are required to take and pass a test assessing their personal preparation, which will take place at the beginning of the Academic Year.
Profile of the programme
The Master’s Degree course focuses on the existing synergies between professional sociologists and specialized social workers, aiming at developing, in the first case, aspects of knowledge and research; in the second one, those related to the ability of elaborating, planning and organizing interventions of social policy.
Qualification requirements and regulations
The Degree Course has a duration of 2 years, and two curricula; one in Sociology and one in Social Policies. The work load of the curriculum in Social Policies is 69 credits (first year) and 51 credits (second year); the curriculum in Sociology is 66 credits (first year) and 54 credits (second year). Formative activities are organized on a six – month basis and are developed through face to face classes, exercises, internships and a final examination. Internships imply the participation in activities within enterprises and public or private bodies within the social – health field.
Key learning outcomes
Graduates of the Master’s Degree in Sociology and Social Policies acquire skills relevant to the methodological, quantitative and qualitative tools of social research and adequate instruments for an effective analysis of social change, of inter – ethnic processes of integration and of main social matters, such as the malaise of growing up, relationships among generations, phenomena of marginalization and deviation. They acquire know how related to the elaboration, planning and management of programmes in the field of social policies and services; management of services within social policies and services, and analysis and assessment of interventions. Furthermore, they develop judgement autonomy and a reflective ability (ability to be) with reference to the adequate tools for an effective analysis of social change; they are able to structure within the aforementioned proceedings governance and policy projects. Finally, graduates acquire the ability to communicate clearly and with an appropriate language with colleagues, people in general, and other professionals and interlocutors, at a national and international level.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Each course may utilize the following didactic teaching methods: face to face classes, seminars, group work, case studies and any further activity that the Professor in charge considers to be useful. The modes of final verification relevant to each course are set forth by the Professor, who can provide for oral, written tests or any other mode suitable to assess learning.
Graduation requirements
The final qualification is awarded upon achievement of 120 credits and the approval of a written thesis.
Mode of study (full-time, part-time, e-learning, ...)
Full-time study and attendance is recommended. However, part–time study is possible. Attendance is not compulsory and students can sit exams according to their rhythm and needs.
Occupational profiles of graduates with examples
Graduates of this Degree course can carry out organizational, managerial and consulting functions for individuals, organizations and institutions. These functions may concern relationship dynamics, management of human resources, organization of resources and facilities and economical management of entities, services and organizations, and planning of social policies.
They can also carry out autonomous, professional activity, within promotion, managerial, didactic – formative and research areas, and support services in social involvement and cohesion, and recognition of social rights.
In particular, knowledge and skills acquired through the curriculum of Social Policies entitles the graduate to the social assistant qualification exam and registration in the relevant Regional Register (Register A).
