Specific admission requirements and specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Access to the courses is open. To be admitted to the master’s degree program applicants must have a three-year university degree or another equivalent degree attained abroad and recognized as suitable. In order to enroll in the program students must have completed 90 curricular credits (ECTS credits) in the following disciplines: IUS/09, 10; L-ANT/01-10; L-FIL-LET/02,04,05,06,07,08; L-LIN/01; M-FIL/06,07.
Specifically, the following ECTS credits are required: for the LM 2 degree class (Archeology): 36 ECTS credits in the L-ANT disciplines; the student must demonstrate his/her certified participation in archeological field research for a total of at least 4 weeks, for the LM 15 degree class (Philology, Literature and History of Antiquity): 12 ECTS credits L-ANT/02; 12 ECTS credits L-ANT/03; 12 ECTS credits L-FIL-LET/02; 12 ECTS credits L-FIL-LET/04; 12 ECTS credits L-LIN/01. In case of a lack of explicitly required ECTS credits, the degree program Council may authorize enrollment so long as 90 ECTS credits among all the indicated disciplines are assured. For the purposes of evaluating the applicant’s suitability for admission to the master’s degree program, consideration will also be given to the degree mark for the first cycle degree, which must be no less than 100/110. In the case of a lower mark, the applicant will have to sustain one or more written exams and/or an oral discussion of the disciplines comprised in the degree program. The Council will then make its decision to admit or not to admit the applicant on the basis of the results of this discussion and a careful evaluation of the applicant’s previous academic career.

Students coming from other degree programs of the Università degli Studi di Perugia or other universities must have their previous academic careers evaluated. The degree program Council will decide whether to recognize the credits attained. Students coming from non-Italian universities may also have their ECTS credits recognized, taking into account the hours of classroom teaching and the student’s work load of individual study. Credits may also be recognized for other educational and training activities performed by the student outside of university structures during the university period, provided such activities are coherent with the objectives of the degree program.

Profile of the programme

The interclass master’s degree program in Archeology and Classical Civilizations is aimed at providing students with advanced scientific, theoretical, methodological, and operational knowledge in the archeology and historical development, linguistics, and literatures of classical civilizations.

Qualification requirements and regulations

The program is divided into two classes of degrees: 1. Archeology (LM2); 2. Classical Civilizations (LM 15). The program has a duration of 2 years during which the student must acquire 120 credits (ECTS credits) including those assigned to the comprehensive final exam. The average work load per academic year is 60 credits with each credit corresponding to 25 hours of study, distributed as follows: 6 hours of classroom teaching, and 19 hours of individual study. The estimated student’s time commitment for the degree program is 3,000 hours. The teaching year is divided into two semesters. Being an interclass degree program (LM 2 and LM 15) in accordance with the Ministerial Decree of 16.03.2007 (“Determination of the classes of university degrees”) students choose when they enroll the degree class in which they intend to take their degree. The student can in any case modify his choice which does not become final until his enrollment in the second year of the program. Students may insert in their curriculum up to 24 ECTS credits over and above those required by the program rules and the extra ECTS credits will be included in the calculation of the student’s final mark for the program. The teaching activities may consist of lectures, seminars, and exercises. Where necessary, individual or classroom tutoring, including computer-assisted learning, will be made available. All of the rules regarding the organization and management of the study path for the degree program in Letters are described in the university teaching regulations (regolamento didattico).

Key learning outcomes

Examination regulations, assessment and grading

For the purpose of evaluating student performance teachers may use written essay exams and/or objective tests, oral exams, discussion of student work products, the critical examination of texts. Teachers may provide for periodic in-course exams for students attending the classes on a regular basis, which exams will be divided into modules. Marks are expressed on a thirty point scale.

Graduation requirements

The degree is awarded upon the acquisition of 120 credits (ECTS credits) and the approval of the written thesis.

The final exam for attainment of the degree, equal to 24 ECTS credits, consists in the elaboration and subsequent discussion, before a commission composed of 11 members, of an original thesis written on a subject agreed upon by a teacher-supervisor and the student within the ambit of one of the courses for which the student has passed the exam during his career in the program. The mark attributed to the final exam is expressed on a 110 point scale (110/110) with the possible attribution of honors, to be conferred upon the unanimous vote of the commission. The calculation of the final mark is made on the basis of the average mark for all exams expressed on a 110 point scale and by the mark attributed to the oral presentation before the commission which mark cannot be in excess of 7 points.
