Maurizio Maurizio Petrelli was born in 1975 in Assisi, Italy. After high school he moved to the University of Perugia where he studied Geological Sciences graduating with honour in Geology with a diploma Thesis in Applied Petrology. He carried out his PhD studies at the University of Perugia, carrying out a research on non-linear dynamics in igneous processes.

In February 2006 he attained his PhD degree discussing a thesis entitled "Non-Linear Dynamics in Magma Interaction Processes and Their Implications to Magma Hybridization During Mixing of Magmas". This work received an award from the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP) as the best PhD Thesis in Petrology for the year 2006.

He is working as Post-Doc Fellow at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Perugia. His Post-Doctoral research is mainly focussed on modelling of magmatic systems and developing new petrologic tools based on classical geochemistry, chaos theory and fractal geometry.

He coupled his research on magmatic systems with an intense laboratory works mainly focused in the development of analytical protocols for laser ablation mass spectrochemistry.
