Phenomenology, structure and dynamics of Soft Matter with the deepening of some relevant case studies.

Educational objectives
The main aim of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge to understand the theoretical fundamentals, some experimental techniques and numerical simulation methods applied to Soft Matter Physics.
The main knowledge gained will cover:
- Basic notions on the phenomenology of Soft Matter: liquids, glasses and living matter.
- Physical principles for understanding static and dynamic properties of Soft Matter.
- Experimental, theoretical and numerical principles applied to the study of some relevant case studies, like simple liquids, polymers, water, hydration of macromolecules, cells and tissues.
The main skills that the course aims to convey are:
- knowing how apply experimenta, theoretical, and numerical methods to the solution of Soft Matter Physics problems
- to be able to propose innovative solutions
Prerequisites
In order to understand the contents of the course, it is necessary to have acquired basic knowledge on Structure of Matter.
Teaching methods
- Lectures on physical principles underlying the Physics of Soft Matter;
- Practical exercises that illustrate the potential of light scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations;
- Seminars given by experts.
Learning verification modality
Oral exam.
The oral exam consists in a discussion lasting about 30 minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge on technical content and methodology of the course (Fenomenology of Soft Matter: liquids, glasses and living matter. Structure, interaction potentials, thermodynamics, transport processes, dynamics. Some relevant case studies). The oral exam will also test the student communication skills and his autonomy in the organization and exposure of the theoretical topics.

Introduction to the phenomenology of Soft Matter: liquids, glasses and living matter.
Theoretical, experimental and numerical methods for the study of structure, thermodynamics, transport processes and dynamics of Soft Matter.
Case studies:
- Physics of polymers: models, experiments and simulations.
- Single molecule diffusion and collective modes in Soft Matter revealed by light scattering experiments.
- The anomalies of water, hydration of macromolecules, cells and tissues.
