Contents
Industrial Minerals: characteristics and environmental problem during their mining, production, employment and dismission. Materials for buildings, clays minerals, zeolites, air pollution, asbestos, and health effect of mineral dust, mine tailings. Methodologies: X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, IR-and Raman spectroscopy

The exam consists of an interview of about 30 minutes aiming to ascertain the knwoledge level and understunding capability acquired by the student on theoretical and methodological contents of the program
Extended program
The course aims to give the basis for the study of the industrial geomaterials, their transformation during the employments, the environmental problems during the production processes and dismission, the energy- saving materials.

In details:

a) characteristics of raw traditional materials for costruction and new materials (recycle materials), transformation processes.

b) clay materials: chemical and mineralogical compositions, geotechnical characteristics. Mineralogical analysis by using X-ray diffraction. Clays minerals as markers of paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions. Clays mineral in the industrial field, in oil research, in environmental problems

c) zeolites: Chemical and mineralogical characteristics, chemical- physical properties, genetic processes. Application of zeolites to oil cracking, in agriculture, in restoration, in industry, in environmental problems( water pollutions)

d) health dangerous minerals: Characterization of asbestos minerals both in massive form or in air, by X-ray diffraction analysis and with electron microscopy. Characterization of the artificial materials used in substitution of asbestos materials (refractory ceramic fibers) and of the silica phases (amorphous silica and crystalline silica)

e) Atmospheric particulate matter: source of particulate matter, compositions, definition ( suspended, fine particles, soot), health effect

f) tailing mining products: definition, compositions, chemical processes and environmental considerations. Reprocessing and remediation methods

The analytic methodologies used to study these materials will be mainly X-ray powder diffraction, electron scanning microscopy, Infrared and Raman spectroscopy.

The main goal is to prepare student to operate in field and in laboratory, with several instruments, give a good knowledge of natural and after transformation geomaterials, to evaluate the employment of new materials, planning and collects measurements for the control of quality of work and of life, following the current regulations
