Contents Chemical and nutritional values of feeds and feedstuffs. Effects of mechanical and heat treatments on chemical, physical and nutritional characteristics. Nutritional requirements of animals; feed treatments, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Feed formulation with spreadsheets and dedicated software. Digestion, dietary principles and the metabolism of the nutrients. Relationship between diet and animal welfare, quality of animal production, and environmental sustainability. European legislation.

Educational objectives The course offer the knowledge to understand relationship between diet and animal welfare, and quality of animal production.
Knowledge for understanding the relationship between diet, well-being and productivity of animals: 1) chemical and nutritional value of feeds; 2) digestion, dietary principles and the metabolism nutrients; 3) classification and description of feeds; 4) nutritional requirements of animals; 5) feed treatments, animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Main competence (i.e. the ability to apply the acquired knowledge) will be: formulate feed or rations to mainly categories of domestic animal species with electronic spreadsheet program to improve digestive efficiency, quality of animal production with respect of animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Teaching methods The course is organized as follow:
- face-to-face theoretical lessons on the topics discussed during the course;
- practical training for applying the topics discussed during the course (feed formulation with spreadsheets and dedicated software).

Contents The form includes the study of nutritional and metabolic pathologies of dairy cows. Therefore will be summarily recovered some topics in Physiology and biochemistry of rumen to understand etiopathogenic mechanisms underlying these diseases and possible principles of prophylaxis. They will also consider some secondary diseases to metabolic and nutritional disorders that contribute to cause reductions in productive performances

Educational objectives This module aims to give information about the metabolism of cattle in order to understand some of the metabolic and nurtritional umbalances that lead to performance reduction. We will go through managerial and nutritional factors that may cause production diseases, with the aim of preventing them. We will focus more on nutritional managment of dayri cattle during the different production phases.
Teaching methods the module is organized as follows:
-lectures conducted by the teacher responasabile the form, about the topics listed in the program
-1 seminar on breast diseases
-1 tutorial at the laboratory of the Department of veterinary medicine, which aims to identify which laboratory investigations may be beneficial in the prevention of dismetabolic problems..
