Industrial plants and their typologies. Classification of industrial plants.
Types of industrial production. Service facilities and technological systems.
The main service facilities: the production and distribution of energy,
the handling of materials, the conditioning of the environment, the reduction of environmental impact.
Overview of industrial plant planning
The location of industrial plants. The study of the layout.

Safety at work in industrial plants
The main legislation concerning safety at work.
Risk assessment. Prevention and protection.
The safety of machinery and industrial plants. The safety of the machines.
The concepts of reliability, maintainability, availability applied to machines and plants.
Industrial activities at risk of a major accident. Tools for risk assessment, FMEA, FMECA,
Fault Tree etc..
Special risks, the explosion risk and ATEX regulations, the risk linked to confined spaces.
The role of maintenance for security management. Failure maintenance, preventive, scheduled,
on condition. The Total Productive Maintenance principles and criteria of application.
Introduction to safety management systems. Quality management systems for the environment and safety.
Emergency plans and their drafting.

The vulnerability and resilience of implants.
The problem of the recovery of production following disastrous events. Supply Chain integration and risk management.
Prevention in production chains for a correct balance between security, redundancy and
short-term profits. Design principles of a resilient production chain. The continuity of the activity

Educational objectives
The aim of the course is to offer students a solid training in issues concerning safety and its management in industrial plants.
At the end of the module the student will have the basic tools to manage the security at company level with particular reference to emergency situations and production resumes. Issues such as Industrial Plants Resilience and Vulnerability and Emergency Logistics are included
