Extended program
Modernism at the peripheries.
Peripheral spaces play an interesting role in modernist narratives, they provide effective metaphors for the representation of consciousness, they also offer a counter discourse through which reading events and contexts. This course discusses the use of peripheral space in modernism through the example of some of the major authors of the period. Indeed, their narratives present challenging contexts in which the periphery (be it a metaphorical representation of a character’s psychological state or an actual space in which characters interact) proves to be instrumental for the development of the story as well as the construction of the characters.
