Contents
The course is an introduction to Latin philology which will find its practical and textual applications in the second module. We intend to outline, first of all, a history of philology in Rome through the critical examination of history outlined by Robert A. Kaster in 2003. We will also evaluate the placement of philological studies in the framework of education in Rome and in the humanistic tradition. and nineteenth century. We will then move on to an illustration of the history of texts in Latin and their handwritten witnesses and to a careful examination of the principles of textual criticism and ecdotics, through a critical examination of the most important bibliography on the subject and highlighting the concepts of 'center and periphery ', copy errors and their types, genesis of errors, emendatio, usus scribendi, reviews, examinatio, eliminatio codicum descriptorum, intentional modifications of the text, glosses and interpolations.

Educational objectives
The course includes the acquisition of the following knowledge: 1. Knowledge of the method of transmission of an ancient text with particular reference to direct tradition; 2. Knowledge of the main notions of ecdotics; 3. Knowledge of the main criteria of textual criticism. The course aims to provide, develop and refine the following skills: 1. Knowing how to read critically; 2. Knowing how to understand the reasons underlying a specific constitutio textus.
Prerequisites
In order to understand and be able to reuse / autonomously elaborate the knowledge and philological concepts envisaged by the teaching, it is necessary to have a good linguistic-grammatical knowledge of Latin.
Teaching methods
The prevailing teaching method foresees - if possible - frontal lessons in the classroom. In-depth seminars are also planned, without prejudice to any other changes communicated by the competent authorities. If necessary, blended teaching will be used (in presence and in telepresence at the same time) with synchronous and / or asynchronous modality.
