Contents
The course will introduce and discuss the Italian Literature from the beginning to the XVIII century, by focusing and analyzing some representative and exemplary texts.
The course is divided into four parts or modules. The first part ("From the origins to Dante") presents and discusses the Italian literature of the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, focusing on some of the main texts and authors and above all on Dante's "Vita nuova", to which an in- depth study will be dedicated.
The secondo module (“From Petrarca to Humanism”) discusses the Italian literature of the fourteenth ad fifteenth centuries: after having analysed texts and authors of the Humanism, a deepening study will be reserved to Boccaccio’s “Decameron” (second “giornata”)-
The third module (“Renaissance, Counterreformation, Science”) is dedicated to sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Italian literature, moving from some insights of “Orlando Furioso” di Ariosto, up to some of the most significant authors and texts.
The fourth module ("Eighteenth and beginning of Nineteenth Century") will focus on some major experiences (Goldoni, Parini, Alfieri, Foscolo).
Reference texts
(1) history of Italian Literature: "Storia della letteratura italiana", a cura da Andrea Battistini, volume I: “Dalle origini al Seicento”, 2014, pp. 632, ISBN: 978-88-15-25252-4. The part on XVIIIth century will be provided by the teacher. Foreign students will be given some support texts.
(2) texts for the institutional part will be indicated at the beginning af the course and partially provided by the teacher.
(3) texts for the in-depth sections of the course (“Vita Nuova”, “Decameron”, “Orlando Furioso”, “Vita”) are available in several editions. Foreign students will be able to use or help themselves with editions in their own language.
(4) critical insight will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Educational objectives
The course aims to provide critical and historical tools for humanistic studies; a good knowledge of the history of Italian literature and of the principal bibliographic and informatic instruments for humanistic study and research; ability in understanding, analysis, contestualisation of literary texts; cultural, critical and specialized use of language. The course is open to all students and it can be the opportunity to develop the language skills in Italian for not italian students. in the in-depth sections the direct reading and commentary of the texts will be enhanced, as well as the debate in the classroom.
Prerequisites
Students are required to have principal notions of history and literary culture and an high level in knowledge and mastery of italian language. These preconditions are valid both for attending and not attending students. Knowledge and ability in italian language is mandatory. Students are expected to achieve an italian language proficiency, either by a laboratorial test or by attending a lab (october-december)
Teaching methods
(1) Lectures and readings, with references to documents, texts and critical or historical essays that will be offered during the course. The analysis of texts will proceed in the form of comment, contextualization and interpretation.

Learning verification modality
The examination consists in oral questions after the conclusion of the course. It concerns understanding, analysis and comment of italian literary text discussed in the course, and the knowledge of themes, issues and authors both discussed in the course or presented in the bibliography provided in the program. The exam aims to ascertain the knowledge level and the ability of the student in comment and contextualization, critical intelligence, cultural, historical and literary sensibility. It consists on three or four or five questions, according to the situation of the student.
Extended program
The course will introduce and discuss the Italian Literature from the beginning to the early XIX century, by focusing and analyzing some representative and exemplary texts.
The first part of the program will concern the main issues and the critical tools for humanistic and Italian studies, and will study the principal authors of Italian literature.

BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR THE EXAM
(a) texts for the institutional part of the course will be indicated and partially provided by the teacher.
(b) texts for the in-depth part of the course (“Vita nuova” of Dante, "Decameron" of Boccaccio, "Orlando Furioso" of Ariosto, probably "Vita" of Alfieri) are available in several editions, and foreign students will be able to use an edition in their own language.

The course aims to provide critical and historical tools for humanistic studies; a good knowledge of the history of Italian literature and of the principal bibliographic and informatic instruments for research; ability in understanding and analyzing a literary text; cultural, critical and specialized use of language. The course is open to all students and it can be the opportunity to develop the language skills in Italian for not italian students.

DIDACTICS
