Phonetics and Phonology of English, recognition, transcription, and analysis of vowels, consonants, aspects of spoken language, and the syllable and intonation of English, and the corresponding functions.

Educational objectives
The objective of this course is to give the students an understanding of natural language sound, intonation, function, recognition of variables, and ability to analyze. The course had a cumulative approach, starting with the smallest units -vowel and consonant phonemes-, considering the phonetics of words, and utterances, moving toward phonology, and the active comprehension of the IPA. The student should learn to read and transcribe the phonetics of English words. On a phonological level, word stress and discourse connected with contextual aspects are illustrated with examples of natural language.
Prerequisites
To be able to understand and manage the course the student must know the general notions relative to the two courses that are prerequisites for this course (level B2+): ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND TRANSLATION I Second Language Acquisition and ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND TRANSLATION II Morphology and Syntax.
Teaching methods
Direct lectures in class, theoretical analysis of phonetics and phonology, and audio practice regarding the transcription and listening and analysis of naturally spoken English.
Other information
All the foreign language courses have two parts, one with the language professor in the department (the only one that assigns credits) and one in the laboratory with language lessons held by language experts at the Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo (CLA).
To be able to take English III the student must first have completed the exams for English I and English II.
Attending the course and the exam at the Centro Linguistico dell'Ateno (CLA- the language center) is highly recommended, and must be complete before being able to complete the exams in the department.
The final grade from the CLA test is worth half of the final course grade.
We advise taking also: Letteratura Anglo Americana (Anglo American literature) and Filologia Germanica (German Philology).

The students follow two parts of each course: a theoretical part of the course concerning the linguistics and translatological analysis of the language that lasts one or two semesters; and a practical part of the course that is taught at the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) and lasts for the whole year (both semesters - 80 hours) aimed at learning and practicing the language. The objective of this practical part of the course exercises is to achieve a level of linguistic knowledge [C1 third year undergraduate, in our case].
International language certification (considered valid for two years for the entrance exam) does not exempt the student from the final course exam held at the end of the annual language courses at the CLA. This examination is mandatory to access the theoretical part of the exam with your Professor in the Department.
Learning verification modality
Progress assessments, a written exam and a final oral exam are foreseen. The students may choose between the final written or the oral exam. The progress assessments in the form of a written pop quiz of open and multiple-choice questions are used to give the students extra points towards their final grade and are not obligatory. Each student must opt for the final written exam of an hour and a half made up of a series of closed questions (multiple-choice, true/false) and open questions, or the oral exam in which the student must respond to questions about each of the course modules.
The length of each test will be: 30 minutes for progress assessments, an hour and a half for the written tests, and 10 to 20 minutes for the oral exams.
