- empirical data on the acquisition of English as a second language
- linguistic perspective on translation competence
Applying knowledge and understanding:
-awareness of one's own process of English as L2 learning/acquisition
-analysis of data concerning one's own output, included translation data
Prerequisites - B1 level of competence in English (Common European Framework)
- Knowledge of the basic notions of linguistics
Teaching methods - Lectures
- Data analysis
Other information The students follow two parts of each course: a theoretical part of the course concerning the linguistics and translatological analysis of the language that lasts one semester; and a practical part of the course that is taught at the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) and lasts for the whole year (both semesters, 80 hours) aimed at learning and practising the language. The objective of this practical part of the course exercises is to achieve a B2 level of linguistic knowledge.
International language certification (considered valid for two years only for the entrance exam) does not exempt the student from the final course exam held at the end of the annual language courses at the CLA. This examination is mandatory to access the theoretical part of the exam with your Professor in the Department.
Learning verification modality - Final oral examination: an interview in English (about 30 minute length) on the topics covered in the course aimed at ascertaining the acquisition by the student of the notions and concepts presented, as well as his/her ability to discuss them in spoken academic English.
- Final written examination: a test (about 2 hour length) on the topics covered in the course aimed at ascertaining the acquisition by the student of the notions and concepts presented, as well as his/her ability to communicate them in written academic English.
Extended program The course focuses on second langiage acquisition theories and on research data concerning the acquisition of English as a second language. A module concentrates on the application of linguistic theories to the acquisition of translation competence and on English to Italian translation practice.
