- Contents
- The course provides for the acquisition of the main analytical skills necessary for the planning and implementation of a diagnostic campaign in the environmental and cultural heritage field
- Reference texts
- “Chimica analitica strumentale” di Skoog, Holler, Crouch, Edizioni EDISES
Lesson notes - Educational objectives
- Students attending the course know:
the principles and application of analytical techniques, invasive and non-invasive, most widely used in environmental chemistry and cultural heritage, the main sampling methods and the methods of treatment of the sample.
Based on this knowledge they will be able to:
properly program a diagnostic campaign in the environmental field and/or on an artwork, predict the possible sources of error on the analyte determination and interpret the data obtained from different analytical techniques. - Prerequisites
- For the full understanding of the topics discussed, knowledge of atomic
and molecular spectroscopies acquired in the Physical Chemistry Courses are very useful - Teaching methods
- The course is organized with lectures on all subjects of the program. Some laboratory experiences focused on invasive analytical techniques will be done.
- Other information
- nn
- Learning verification modality
- The exam consists of an oral test of sufficient duration to ascertain the
level of knowledge and understanding acquired by the student on the
contents of the program and the presentation of a report concerning the activities carried out in laboratory - Extended program
- Sampling techniques, transport, storage and treatment of samples for subsequent analysis.
Invasive analytical techniques: atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma source (ICP-AES),
Mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma source (ICP-MS).
Not invasive analytical techniques: X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, FT near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV-VIS spectroscopy both in absorption and emission. After a brief review of the physical principles characterizing spectroscopic techniques, the most recently used analytical methods, including multi- and hyper-spectral imaging and mapping, and applications of these methods to the problems of environmental chemistry and cultural heritage will be addressed.
