Contents Cognitive Linguistics in English: the relationship between language and cognitive processing in the human brain. An introduction to the fundaments (see program) and the application of the analytical method 'Conceptual Metaphor Theory' not only to English but also to translation of English into Italian and vice versa.

Educational objectives The students shall reach an understanding of Cognitive linguistics, semantics, and conceptual metaphor theory, as needed to understand and translate English, acquiring the metalinguistic knowledge that will allow them to analyze natural language occurrences of English in a scientific manner.
Prerequisites The MA course ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND TRANSLATION I- Cognitive Semantics requires that the students have at least 3 courses in undergraduate English, and a C1 level.
Teaching methods The didactic methods include direct lectures in class, theory, practical analysis and translation practice and teaching regarding the cognitive operations discussed in the program.
Each student will be invited to present a topic to the class.
Other information The courses Letteratura Anglo Americana (Anglo American literature) and Filologia Germanica (German Philology) are reccommended. All the foreign language courses have two parts, one with the language professor in the department (the only one that assigns credits) and one in the laboratory with language lessons held by language experts at the Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo (CLA). Attending the course and the exam at the Centro Linguistico dell'Ateno (CLA- the language center) is highly recommended. The final grade from the CLA test is worth half of the final course grade.

The students follow two parts of each course: a theoretical part of the course concerning the linguistics and translatological analysis of the language that lasts one or two semesters; and a practical part of the course that is taught at the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) and lasts for the whole year (both semesters - 80 hours) aimed at learning and practicing the language. The objective of this practical part of the course exercises is to achieve a level of linguistic knowledge [C1 + first MA, in our case].
International language certification (considered valid for two years for the entrance exam) does not exempt the student from the final course exam held at the end of the annual language courses at the CLA. This examination is mandatory to access the theoretical part of the exam with your Professor in the Department.
Learning verification modality Progress assessments, a written exam and a final oral exam are forseen. The students may choose between the written or the final oral exam. The progress assessments in the form of a written pop quiz of open and multiple choice questions are used to give the students extra points towards their final grade and are not obligatory. Each student must opt for the final written exam of an hour and a half made up of a series of closed questions (mulitple choice, true/false) and open questions, OR the oral exam in which the student must respond to questions about each of the course modules.
The length of each test will be: 30 minutes for progress assessments, an hour and a half for the written tests, and 10 to 20 minutes for the oral exams.
Extended program Cognitive Semantics of English investigates a synthesis of how the various aspects of linguistic knowledge emerge from a common set of human cognitive abilities upon which they draw. It combines analysis of cognitive structure, conceptual structure, and semantic structure. Areas of interest include conceptual structures and cognitive processes governing linguistic representation and behavior, cognitive approaches to lexical semantics, syntactic representation and analysis, frameworks of cognitive grammar and construction grammar. The four guiding principles of cognitive semantics discussed are: i) Conceptual structure is embodied; ii) Semantic structure is conceptual structure; iii) Meaning representation is encyclopedic; iv) Meaning construction is conceptualization, and how these principles are specifically manifested in English. The fundamental theories that guide a cognitive analysis include: Image Schema Theory, Encyclopedic Semantics, Cognitive Lexical Semantics, Categorization and Idealized Cognitive Models, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, Conceptual Metonymy, Mental Spaces Theory, Conceptual Blending Theory. These theories will be discussed in English and used to analyze English utterances and how they contrast with other languages. Cognitive linguistics will be further discussed in relation to translation studies, and teaching.
