Educational objectives
To understand the principles of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology with particular regard to the chemical modifications of biotech products. To know the main techniques to analyze, to purify and to manipulate biomasses.
Prerequisites
In order to understand the topics covered during the course and achieve the learning objectives, it is necessary to have acquired both chemical and biological basic knowledge to be used as starting platform. In particular, it is essential to have successfully passed the examination of Organic Chemistry.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons by slides projection and practical laboratory experiences followed by written reports.

Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral test of about 20 min. The oral test is designed to assess the level of knowledge attained by the student on the theoretical contents covered in the program, his/her logical reasoning, the ability to communicate appropriately and organize coherently the subject matter of the test.
In the final evaluation, the written reports of laboratory work will be also taken into account.
The score range is between 18 (lowest) to 30 (highest) with the possibility of honors.
Extended program
Lectures (4 CFU): Antibiotics as traditional biotechnology products. Fermentative production of penicillin. Chemical and productive aspects in the processing of biomasses; chemical reactions by the use of microorganisms and enzymes for the production of biotechnological products. Outline of glycomics and glycochemistry. Theoretical aspects of chromatography and polarimetry. Chemical and pharmaceutical aspects of siRNAs: chemical modification, structure-affinity relationships and stability. Design of new siRNA. Aptamers and ribozymes.
Laboratory (2L CFU): The student after learning key information regarding the equipment materials and glassware used in a biotechnology laboratory will attend or participate actively in laboratory experiments concerning: - Identification reactions used by FU, polarimetric analysis, and TLC of penicillins, amino acids and sugars. Separation of mixtures. Enantioselective reduction of ethyl acetoacetate through the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
