Contents
Classes consist of lectures and practical sections. The students will develop skills in the design, production and screening of a monoclonal antibodies, transgenic and knockout animals.

Educational objectives
The main aim of this teaching course is to provide students with the bases needed for producing a biopharmaceutical as a molecule identical to an endogenous one or an artificial one.
The main knowledge acquired will be:
• Basic methods for obtaining monoclonal antibodies:
• The use of antibodies and proteins as therapeutic agents
• Main methods for obtaining engineered cells and animals.
The main skills will be:
• Produce an hybridoma
• The characterization of knockout and transgenic animals.
Chimeric receptors and proteins.
Prerequisites
In order to understand the content covered and achieve the goals of this course it will be necessary to have the knowledge of the basic techniques of molecular biology and of the principles of general pharmacology. These are the notions that the students should have acquired in his/her school curriculum. The knowledge of these topics is an important prerequisite for the students planning to follow this course with profit.

Learning verification modality
The exam consists an oral exam. This test consists in a discussion lasting about twenty minutes aimed at ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding achieved by students on the theoretical and practical content of the program (antibodies and proteins as biopharmaceuticals animal engineering for the production of biologically active molecules ). The oral exam will also allow to check the communication skills of the student and his/her autonomy in the organization and exposure of theoretical topics.

Practical activities on the production of monoclonal antibodies and on knockout mice characterization and target validation.
