Contents The course deals with the general aspects of production processes, mechanical and functional properties and material selection criteria. The bonds and microstructural properties of steel and metal alloys, ceramic materials, binders, plastics, adhesives, glass and composite materials are deepened.

Educational objectives Acquisition of Fundamental Knowledge on Materials Science. Basic principles of structure and physical properties of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. Some considerations on property-structure relations of materials. Provide tools for understanding the main physico-chemical properties of materials for designing structures and / or devices

Extended program Diagram of pure substances, phase rule, isomorphic binary alloys, lever rule, non-equilibrium solidification, homogenization, partial solubility, eutectic reaction, Peritectic alloys, monothectic alloys, eutectoid alloys. DIAGRAMS FOR NON-EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAMS, Fe-C AND HEAT TREATMENTS: cast iron and steel, Fe-Fe3C diagram, heat treatments: martensite, TTT diagrams, CCT diagrams, annealing, normalization, hardening, recovery. PLASTIC DEFORMATION AND HEAT TREATMENTS: introduction, sliding systems, plastic deformation of monocrystalline, resolved shear stress, the difference between scrolling and gemination, plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials, annealing, recovery, recrystallization, grain growth. ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES: electrical conduction in metals, semiconductors, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, dielectrics. MAGNETIC PROPERTIES: magnetic materials, magnets, types of magnetism, T effect on ferromagnetism, ferromagnetic domains, hysteresis loops, permanent magnetic materials, superconductors. WET and DRY CORROSION: introduction, electrochemical corrosion in metals, galvanic cells, factors that affect the corrosion, corrosion rate, polarization, passivation, forms of corrosion, oxidation of metals, corrosion protection CERAMIC MATERIALS AND GLASSES: introduction, chemical bonds in ceramic, basic structural relationships, structures of the oxides, silicate structures, machining of ceramic, mechanical properties, thermal properties, the glass structure.
