Extended program
The course will offer an exploration of English literature in the period ranging from the end of the Eighteenth century to the beginning of the Twentieth, with a particular focus on Romantic poetry and the evolution of the novel.
The first module, held by Annalisa Volpone, focuses on Romantic poetry. After a general introduction on the most prominent aspects of romanticism, the course will discuss the following: William Blake’s Visions of the Daughters of Albion, Christabel di S. T. Coleridge e The Triumph of Life di P.B. Shelley. These texts provide a good example of the explorations and experimentations on poetry during the romantic period.
The second and third modules, taught by prof. Camilla Caporicci, will be devoted to the novel, one of the most significant literary genres of the period taken into consideration. After an analysis of the development of the novel between the end of the Eighteenth century and the beginning of the Twentieth, the course will offer an in-depth study of two masterpieces of English literature: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. The two novels will be considered in light of both the specificity of the two novelists’ production and their literary and cultural background.
