Extended program
Russian and Soviet literature of the early twentieth century.

The course provides an initial approach to the study of early 20th century Russian literature, from the particular perspective of the transition from the literary avant-garde to the birth of socialist realism, through some of its most important figures: Cechov, Blok, Babel', Bulgakov. The great historical-cultural events that led to the birth of literary and artistic avant-garde in Russia (with particular regard to the October Revolution as a central moment in Russian history) will be explored, an attempt will be made to give an overview of trends, schools and authors who recognized themselves in the avant-garde, deepening some of the their most important expressions in the field of arts and culture ("high" and "low" literature, cinema, theater, folk culture) without, however, neglecting the work of artistic and literary groups, which recognized themselves in the flow of the XIX century tradition. The historical, political and literary process that will culminate with the birth of socialism realism as the only artistic method admitted in the USSR will be illustrated.
