Contents
This is an introductory course to selected topics in chemistry: gas phase and solution chemical equilibria; kinetics; electrochemistry; atomic and molecular structure; chemical bonding. The sequence of topics covered in the course begins with the macroscopic description of chemical phenomena and then continues with the properties of atoms and molecules.

Educational objectives

The students should be able to explain laws and theories of chemistry and use key concepts in solving simple problems. For example, they should be able to: use thermodynamics laws to describe chemical and physical equilibria; illustrate the relationship between the equilibrium constant and the rate constants of forward and reverse reactions; illustrate the general aspects of acid base and of oxidation reduction reactions; predict spontaneous change; identify reactions that can transform chemical energy into electrical energy and vice versa; write the ground state electronic configuration of an element; use the periodic table to predict and explain the periodic trends of atomic properties; draw the Lewis structure of simple molecules and ions; predict the shape and polar character of molecules.
Prerequisites
Students should be familiar with the gas laws and fundamental aspects of the thermodynamics (concepts taught in the first- year courses). Knowledge of high school chemistry, including nomenclature, is highly recommended.
Teaching methods
The course is organized as follows: twenty-one lectures (42h) on all subjects of the course devoted to the presentation of the basic concepts showing how to apply fundamental chemical ideas to solve selected problems in inorganic chemistry to help students to enhance their understanding of the main topics.

Learning verification modality
The final exam will be an oral exam lasting approximately 40 minutes. Students are expected to come prepared to answer questions and solve simple problems covering the work of the entire semester. The final exam aims to verify skills and level of knowledge acquired by the student on the course contents.

Models of reactions.¿–  Atomic structure –  Atomic orbitals. The Building-Up Principle. The electronic configurations of atoms. The periodicity of atomic properties. –  Molecular structure and bonding –  Ionic and covalent bonds. Electronegativity. Lewis Structures. The VSEPR Model. Models of chemical bonding. Structure and reactivity of selected molecules relevant in organic and inorganic chemistry.
