- The course is build up by three parts. The first one introduces some basic concepts of microeconomics, relative to production costs and the consumption theory applied to the agri-food system. The second part analyzes some peculiarities of the agri-food system and its functioning, with particular reference to Italian reality. The third part concerns policies, with particular reference to EU agricultural and rural development policies and their effects in Italy

- Educational objectives
- The course provides students with the basic knowledge of the economic thinking as well as the conceptual foundations needed to understand the functioning of both the food chains and the agro-food system. Through this, the student will acquire the knowledge, analytical tools and management techniques needed to understand phenomena related to the agro-food sector.
- Prerequisites
- For attending the course basic notion of math are mandatory.
- Teaching methods
- The course is organized as follows:
- Frontal lessons about all subjects in the course.
- Seminars on specific topics related to the course program and held by experts on the subject- Exercises in the classroom - Learning verification modality
- Script and oral exam. The script consists of 6 open and 6 closed questions, has an hour duration and is considered passed with a minimum vote of 15/30. Students who do not reach the minimum rate cannot do the oral exam.

Business Decision Process Management Elements (CFU 1.5)
Factor-production decision (economic functions, good economic, producer choices)
Factor-factor decision (isoquant curves, iso- cost curves, revenue and business equilibrium)
The structure of agricultural markets (CFU 1)
Market forms (perfect competition, oligopoly, monopoly and monopoly competition); The cobweb model; Distribution channels
The Community Agricultural Policy (CFU 1)
The European Union: the institutions and policies; The CAP: market policies; Price control, the stabilization of markets and income; Steps and evolution of the CAP: reforms; The CAP 2014-2020; The rural development policy and the Leader Community Initiative; The EU and the world: the WTO and international agreements.
Food Policy and Safety (CFU 1)
Food security: quality, typology and traceability. Policies, tools and norms.
