Contents Toxicants that decrease the productive and reproductive performances of livestock and toxicological risks from chemical residues in edible tissues of food producing animals.

Educational objectives The aim of the course is to supply basic knowledge about:

- the way in which  the environmental contaminants affect the productions of livestock animals
-assessment and management of toxicological risks from  drug residues and environmental contaminants in products of animal origin
- National monitoring of the presence of chemical residues in foodstuff of animal origin
These  knowledge will provide several key elements to  understand the process that ensures the quality of animal products in accordance with Community legislation.
The main skills, arising from the gained  knowledge during the course, will be useful to graduate in PA to intervene in the production chain regard to the risk of  residues
Teaching methods face to face for all arguments of the course
Practical training for:
Pharmacokinetic principles (multiple-choice quizzes by the use of a personal response system)
Determination of the presence of chemical residues in biological fluids of livestock (laboratory)
Determination of withdrawal time (multimedia classroom)

Extended program Kinetics of drugs and toxicants in the animal organism: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. Environmental contaminants that affect the productive and reproductive performances of livestock.Classification of drug and chemical residues in the edible tissues of food producing animal. Management of toxicological risks from drug residues and environmental contaminants in products of animal origin. National and European legislation about residues in animal foodstuff. Practical training for:

National Sanitary System; identification of the animals.
Method of transmission of MI, course and outcome. Frequency measures of the diseases.

MI surveillance (monitoring, control and eradication plans).

Direct prophylaxis; role of cleansing and disinfection; characteristics and use of the main disinfectants.

Educational objectives D1 - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student must:
- have general knowledge about the importance of Infectious Diseases, their social and health impact (zoonoses, notifiable diseases, transboundary diseases, emerging infectious diseases);
-know how infectious diseases spread in animal and human populations;
-know the possible evolution that an etiological agent can undergo and the causing factors;
-know the main biosecurity measures to be taken in case of infectious diseases;
- know the main diagnostic methods, including their limits, applied in Infectious Diseases;
- know the main methods of direct and indirect prophylaxis to be applied in farms.
- know the main vaccination protocols in dogs and cats.

D2 - APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know what happens when a notified infectious disease is to be managed;
- understanding of new scenarios that are created with emerging infectious diseases;
- know how to apply the most correct diagnostic protocol for a specific infectious disease, depending on the clinical picture and the epidemiological situation;
- know how to interpret the results of laboratory tests specific for infectious diseases and be able to assess the limits of individual tests;
- know how to apply the most appropriate prophylaxis, depending on the specific etiologic agent involved and the epidemiological situation.
- know how to apply the most appropriate vaccination protocol, based on the analysis of the risk / benefit ratio.

D3 - MAKING JUDGMENT
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know how to identify the most appropriate biosecurity measures and vaccination protocols to be applied in different contexts;
- use the knowledge on the microbiological characteristics of an etiological agent to apply the most appropriate diagnostic methods and means of prophylaxis.

D4 - COMMUNICATION
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
- know how to organize, prepare and present a speech on some aspects concerning infectious diseases of farm animals (zoonoses, notifiable diseases, transboundary diseases, emerging infectious diseases, diagnostic protocols, vaccination protocols), using a simple but technical terminology;
-support an adversarial process with people of different levels of preparation and experts of different issues;
- demonstrate language properties, as well as the ability to use terminology that is sufficiently appropriate for a correct approach to the profession, which is also important for job interviews.

D5 - LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS
At the end of the training the student will be able to:
-know where to consult updated information, consult and understand technical scientific texts, bibliographic updates, normative rules, to employ them in contexts usual for the profession and research, but also when new situations arise.
- be sufficiently expert of the subject to guarantee an acceptable basis for continuing professional updating through ongoing lifelong learning.
Prerequisites Passing the exams of Physiology, General and Applied Microbiology and Veterinary General Pathology is a prerequisite to take this exam.
Teaching methods The course is developed face-to-face lessons and practical activities.
Face-to-face lessons deal with the topics reported in the program, and are held in the classroom. Seminars will be held with practictioners to explore the aspects of specific production chains.
Field visits to farms will be carried out.
Other information The course will be from February, 2023 to May, 2023, each Wednesday and Tuesday in a room of the didactic care of the Department of the Veterinary Medicine.

Learning verification modality The exam consists of an interview, lasting about 30 minutes, in which three questions are asked of the student, with the aim of ascertaining the level of knowledge and understanding reached on the topics covered. The oral test also allows you to verify that the student has developed a good ability to communicate the information acquired with language properties and to know how to apply the acquired notions.

Educational objectives The primary aim of the module is to provide students with an adequate knowledge of the main parasites of the main parasites that cause poor performance in livestock or food-borne parasitic zoonoses, in order to provide the tools to understand its life cycle and host-parasite interactions.

The main knowledge gained will provide the essential elements to optimize the parasitological control of the production chain and reduce losses.

As for the acquired abilities, students at the end of the course will be able to:

- recognize the main parasites of livestock through the common diagnostic entomological and/or coprological techniques;

- prepare slides for the identification of the mites;

- carry out inspections on farms in order to identify any critical parasitological points and suggest to the farmer the correct actions to take to improve the health status of the animals.
Prerequisites In order to understand the arguments of the various modules it is necessary that the student has passed the exam of Physiology, General and Applied Microbiology and General Veterinary Pathology Principles. In addition, the ability to apply the knowledge gained in the field during the course is an indispensable prerequisite for students planning to follow this course with profit.
Teaching methods Theoretical lessons (70%).

Practical activities (30%)
Learning verification modality The exam includes an oral test, which consists of a discussion lasting about 60 minutes aiming to ascertain the knowledge level and the understanding reached by the student on some of the topics covered in the teaching. The oral examination must, also, to verify the ability to communicate with the student adequate command of the language and be able to apply the knowledge gained in the field.
Extended program Theoretical lessons:
-Introduction to the concept of parasite and parasitism: essential terminology, host-parasite relationship, concept of zoonoses.
Sanitary and socio-economic importance of the parasitic diseases in farm animals.

-Protozoa: toxoplasmosis and neosporosis; coccidiosis; piroplasmosis.

-Trematodes: Fascioliasis and Dicrocoeliosis.

-Tapeworms: Taeniasis of livestock; metacestodiasis (hydatid disease, coenurosis and cysticercosis).

-Nematodes: gastro-intestinal and bronchopulmonary strongylosis; ascariasis; anisakiasis; trichinosis.

-Arthropods: Ectoparasites (ticks, mites, lice, fleas, bloodsucking diptera); myiasis.

Practical training:
-Coprological diagnostic methods: vision of macro and microscopic samples/slides of protozoa and helminthes;

-Entomological diagnostic methods: sampling and preparation/vision of macro and microscopic slides of arthopods;

-Visit to livestock or food companies.
