Outlines of art history in Italy from the early fifteenth century to the mid-eighteenth century, with monographic, thematic and methodological insights.
Reference texts
For art historical outlines, a textbook of your choice from the following:
- C. Bertelli, G. Briganti, A. Giuliano, Storia dell’arte italiana, Electa, Milano.
- P. De Vecchi, E. Cerchiari, Arte nel tempo, Bompiani, Milano.
- F. Negri Arnoldi, Storia dell’Arte, Fabbri, Milano.
- R. Scrimieri, L’arte e la storia dell’arte, Minerva Italica, Milano.

The study of the chosen textbook implies the knowledge of all the introductory parts, those devoted to the in-depth study of specific topics (defining the general characters of an era, in-depth study of an artistic genre or technique, etc.), as well as knowledge of the profiles of the artists indicated in the list of names prepared for this purpose (the list indicates a greater number of personalities for students enrolled in Beni Culturali).

For methodological outlines:G. C. Sciolla, Studiare l'Arte. Metodo, analisi e interpretazione delle opere e degli artisti, Novara 2010.

The study of the text-book should be supplemented with the choice of monographic volume related to one of the eras covered during the classes. Each student should choose one volume from those listed below, . The texts must be studied in their entirety, except for those for which different indications are given in round brackets.

The volumes between the students can choose are:
- For the late Gothic: S. Bettini, Il gotico internazionale, a cura di E. Bordignon Favero, Vicenza, Neri Pozza, 1996 [the volume can be found in the Biblioteca umanistica: Arte-musica, Op. Gen. 047].
- For the early Renaissance: R. Longhi, Fatti di Masolino e di Masaccio, Milano, Abscondita, 2014 [with special attention to pp. 9-85, namely the essay first published in "Critica d'arte," V, 1940, nos. 25/26, pp. 145-191]
- For the Late Renaissance: M. Baxandall, Painting and Experience in Fifteenth Century Italy: A Primer in the Social History of Pictorial Style, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1972 [the volume is translated into Italian by Einaudi: Pittura ed esperienze sociali nell'Italia del Quattrocento, Turin, Einaudi, 1978. The volume can be found in the Biblioteca umanistica: Arte-musica, St. Crit. Baxa. 1].
- For the Early Cinquecento: A. Pinelli, La bella maniera: artisti del Cinquecento tra regola e licenza, Torino, Einaudi, 1993.
- For the Late Cinquecento: J. K. G. Shearman, Mannerism, Harmondsworth, Penguin Books, 1967 [the volume is translated into Italian by S.P.E.S.: Il Manierismo, Florence, S.P.E.S., 1983. The volume can be found in the Biblioteca umanistica: Arte-musica, Op. Gen. 318]
- - For the transition between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: F. Zeri, Pittura e controriforma. L’arte senza tempo di Scipione da Gaeta, Torino, Einaudi, 1957 [reprint can be consulted: Vicenza, Pozza, 1997. The text can be found in Humanities Library: Arte-musica, Op. Gen. A 022]
- for the Baroque: F. Haskell, Patrons and Painters: a study in the relations between Italian Art and Society in the age of the Baroque, London, Chatto & Windus, 1963 [the volume is translated into Italian by Sansoni: Mecenati e pittori, studio sui rapporti tra arte e società italiana nell'età barocca, Florence, Sansoni, 1966. The reprint can be consulted: Turin, Einaudi, 2020. The volume can be found in the Biblioteca umanistica: Arte-musica, Op. Gen. 072] (The essay should be studied only for the introductory parts and those devoted to Baroque Rome, leaving out the chapter on Venice in the eighteenth century; i.e., with reference to the Einaudi edition, the following should be studied: Prefazione, Parte prima, Parte seconda, Conclusioni).
- For the late seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries: R. Wittkower, Art and Architecture in Italy 1600 to 1750, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, Penguin Books, 1958 [the volume is translated into Italian by Einaudi: Arte e architettura in Italia: 1600-1750, Turin, Einaudi, 1958. A reprint may be consulted: Turin, Einaudi, 2018. The volume can be found in the Biblioteca umanistica: Arte-musica, Op. Gen. 062] (The essay should be studied only for the introductory parts, the conclusions and those parts devoted to the late Baroque and Rococo periods).
In the case of specific interests of the student, the study of one of these volumes may be substituted by another academic book (essay, exhibition catalog, etc.).
In order to identify cross-cutting topics (as a substitute for the above texts), it is suggested that the following collective works be consulted:
- PLa pittura in Italia, Milano, Electa [particularly for the volumes between "Il Duecento e il Trecento" (edited by E. Castelnuovo, 1986) and "Il Settecento" (edited by G. Briganti, 1990)].
- Storia dell'arte italiana, 12 vols., Turin, Einaudi, 1979-1983.
Educational objectives
Prerequisites
It is assumed that the student has acquired during schooling a general knowledge of the historical and cultural, literary, philosophical and geographical context relating to the period under study. In addition, a basic understanding of the main stylistic directions and major personalities qualifying the history of art in Italy between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age is hoped for.
Teaching methods
Lectures with screenings, tutorials, educational visits. Study visits to Foligno, Florence, Rome.

Learning verification modality
The examination includes a final oral test consisting of an interview on stylistic directions, figurative issues, schools and centers of artistic production, the most significant personalities and their
main works. These topics are expounded in the recommended textbooks (see Reference Texts) and partly addressed and deepened during the course. The interview is mostly composed of three questions on different topics and periods, to which is added the discussion of the volume chosen by the candidate between the recommended ones (see Reference Texts). The interview will also assess the methodological knowledge inherent in the discipline (see Reference Texts) and the ability to read the works with correct language property. For attending students, active participation in lectures and tutorials will be an additional element of positive evaluation.
Extended program
