- The purpose of the course is to provide the theoretical and practical basic notions of some of the most important techniques commonly used in clinical virology. In particular, issues relating to the direct and indirect diagnosis of viral infections will be addressed with particular focus on the most modern laboratory methods. A fundamental aspect of the teaching will be to deepen the clinical knowledge of the viral infections of greatest impact on human health.

- The course will be held through lectures in which the professor explains the basics, also through the aid of visual aids, and provides practical examples to facilitate their understanding, through practical exercises in the laboratory related to the techniques explained and the use of interactive laboratories.

- Special virology: main families of clinically relevant viruses. Ethiopathogenesis of viral infections. Maternal-fetal and peri-natal viral infections: epidemiology, risk factors and diagnostic strategies. Rubella virus, CMV, Parvovirus. Viral infections of the respiratory, urogenital and gastrointestinal tract. Viral infections in the immunocompromised patient (AIDS, organ transplant) and diagnostic strategies: HIV, Herpesviridae - VZV, CMV, EBV, HHV-6, HHV-8. Hepatotropic viruses: HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV. Screening and second level diagnostic tests. Selection of suitable clinical samples, maintenance and transport, request criteria, diagnostic algorithm, preparation of the report.
