Contents
The course focuses on the links between circular economy (CE), international cooperation (IC) and design. The contents of the course provide an understanding of these links from the point of view of the economic and social impact of the advanced design activity. In particular, products, services, innovative solutions (PSIS) oriented to quality of life and/or sustainability are evaluated ex ante focusing on their economic and social acceptability. The role of consumers/users/citizens (CUC) is crucial for the dissemination of PSIS implemented according to CE and IC principles. In particular, the theoretical and practical tools will be provided to assess the extent to which market demand (CUC) is able to financially support the PSIS designed both as prototypes and as final outputs. Furthermore, if market demand is not able to support the costs of these PSIS financially, it is possible to estimate the amount of public expenditure that may be necessary for their realization.
The contents of the course are divided into three levels.
First level: theory of the demand for goods with or without market, stated preferences method.
Second level: principles of CE and IC applied to the design of PSIS.
Third level: application of the first two levels with group work assignment (max 3 students) on the assessment of the economic and social acceptability of cases study. The third level includes:
a) literature review
b) construction of focus groups
c) definition of survey questionnaires and their method of administration
d) pre-test questionnaires and their evaluation
e) definition of the final questionnaire and its administration
f) data collection and final economic and social evaluation
g) public presentation of results achieved

Educational objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the theoretical and empirical tools to implement an economic and social evaluation of products, services and innovative solutions that refer to both the relationships among men and between men and earth. These tools make it possible to carry out an in-depth analysis in terms of welfare. This is possible thanks to the application of the stated preferences method, which is also applicable in the absence of markets and prices, given that this method allows to simulate a hypothetical market.
In this way it is possible to integrate economic and social evaluation with real needs, possibly also taking into account the different cultural views of peoples. An assessment that takes into account sustainability by referring to an economy that respects human rights, life and the earth.
Finally, the contribution of this course to the goal of multidisciplinary is twofold:
a) the contents are adaptable to all four areas of training
b) the tools are applicable to all design outputs.
