Contents IPM and biological control of the most important agricultural insect pests
Reference texts - Difesa sostenibile delle colture - Principi, sistemi e tecnologie applicate alle produzioni agricole, a cura di Paola Battilani, Edagricole (2016), euro 38,50
- Slides, papers and other material provided by the teacher
Educational objectives - Management of the principal insect pests in agroecosystems;
- Knowledge of the tritrophic interactions between plant- phytophagous insect - entomophagous (natural enemy);
Knowledge of the methods and tools to implement IPM and organic strategies of crop pests
Prerequisites In order to understand and apply most of the subjects discussed during the course it is necessary that the student has a good knowledge of Entomology, Microbiology, inorganic and organic Chemistry and logical scientific reasoning ability. It is essential to have good skills in the use of written and oral Italian language; it is useful to possess basic knowledge in the use of written and oral English language and also knowledge of
data processing and informatics.
Teaching methods Lessons, laboratory and field pratical work, talks given by the students on a case study.
Other information Location:
Classroom of the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences - University of Perugia
Learning verification modality The oral exam will be about 30 min. long, aiming at ascertain the level of theoretical and practical knowledge acquired and the skills reached by the students in organizing, integrating and connecting what they have learned in relation to the various subjects developed during the course. In particular, the oral exam aims at developing and apply integrated and biological control strategies according to the current regulations. The oral exam will also check the student's ability to express himself with a correct use of language and to show an organizational culture and a professional approach.
Extended program Epidemiology concepts in agricultural entomology.
Basics of population dynamics and economic damage. Diagnostic of damaged plant organs.
Evolution of plant protection (chemical control, IPM, organic farming).
Principal projects in biological control. Role of hedges and wild plants in conserving biodiversity. IPM and organic farming (biological control) in some agroecosystems.
IPM and biological control in greenhouses and in urban system. Practical work
Field trips to the experiments fields of the DSA3: olive, orchards, crops. Damage analysis due to insect attacks. Set-up of pheromone-based traps. Visits to greenhouses. Visit to insect rearing facility.

Contents During the course, the most important concepts of general Plant pathology, the integrated and organic control strategies, the use of fungicides, the control of the most important pre- and post-harvest fungal diseases and the problems related to food and feed mycotoxin contamination will be illustrated.
External visits will be organised at qualified farms and industries during which the main aspects of integrated and organic management of plant disease will be discussed.
Reference texts Slides shown during the course and provided by the lecturer.
Educational objectives The objective of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge to manage the problems related to the integrated and organic control of pre- and post-harvest fungal diseases of plants.
The main acquired knowledge and understanding will be:
1. Basic knowledge of Plant pathology
2. Physical, genetic, agronomic and chemical control measures
3. Phytosanitary legislation
4. Disease control in organic farming
5. Support systems for the integrated control of plant diseases
6. Control of the most important fungal diseases of wheat, barley, maize, grapes and olive trees.
7. Prevention and control of the most important post-harvest fungal diseases of food staples and basic storage techniques
8. Mycotoxins in food and feed and their control

The main student abilities will be:
1. Recognise the most important pre- and post-harvest fungal diseases and their causal agents
2. Setup a correct disease diagnosis and correct prevention and control strategies in pre- and post-harvest phases.
3. Identify the most important hazards related to the use of pesticides and to the presence of mycotoxins in food.

Behaviour
1. To be sensible to the importance of the scarcity/abundance of food and to food security in the world.
2. To be conscious about the risks related to the presence of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in food.
Prerequisites Knowledge on Plant pathology.
Teaching methods Theoretical classroom lessons on the illustrated topics, with the aid of Power Point presentations.
Laboratory practical lessons and external visits.
Other information Attendance is strongly recommended.
Learning verification modality Oral examination.

Extended program During the course, the control means against plant diseases will be illustrated. Initially, the main concepts of general Plant pathology will be recalled. Knowledge on principles, methods and techniques to be used to set up correct integrated and organic control strategies of plant diseases will be given, to provide a sustainable management aiming at safeguarding the environment and public health. Knowledge and tools to conduct phytopatological and epidemiological diagnoses, including the use of modern alert systems as a support to integrated control of plant disease will be provided as well as information on the sustainable and correct use of pesticides. The course will also focus on post-harvest diseases of fruits and cereals and on the problems related to tge presence of mycotoxins in food and feed. Finally, study cases on the prevention and control of the main fungal diseases of cereals, grapes, olive tree and of a vegetable crop will be examined. During the course, technical visits to farms and/or companies adopting integrated or organic management will be conducted.
