Contents
The course aims to provide students with the main notions on the structure, mechanical and physical properties, main applications, processing technologies and biodegradation phenomena of thermoplastic, thermosetting and elastomeric biopolymers and related composites.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to correctly choose the most suitable material for each application he/she will have to deal with, evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using new bio-based materials, and study the possibility of realising components with different materials from those currently used, thus achieving savings in economic and environmental terms.

Educational objectives
The course aims to acquire knowledge on synthesis, process technologies, use, characterization techniques of natural, synthetic and composite biodegradable polymeric materials, to provide students with the necessary knowledge to evaluate the sustainability of a polymeric material, its application and disposal in the environment. They will also study the interactions and impact of the polymer with the environment throughout its life cycle, interpreting the property-structure correlations and predicting the physical and chemical properties of the polymer based on its molecular structure.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and mathematics.science and technology of polymeric materials
Teaching methods
The course is articulated in frontal lectures with the help of Powerpoint presentations
Learning verification modality
Oral exam
Extended program
Definition and classification of biomaterials. Definitions Polymeric and composite biomaterials. Biodegradable, bioresorbable, bioactive materials. Composite biomaterials (metal-ceramic, metal-metal, ceramic-ceramic, polymer-ceramic). Problems of biomaterials: the various forms of degradation: functional degradation, environmental degradation and programmed degradation. Applications and technological processes of production and forming. Chemical methodologies and analytical techniques for the synthesis and characterization of biopolymers from microbial synthesis and biodegradable biopolymers. Advantages and disadvantages in terms of economic and environmental sustainability.
