Contents
• An introduction to the Philology of Italian literature and the research tools (paper and online).
• Cases study: some positive aspects, philological and critical, arguments to the texts of Italian literature.
Reference texts
The reference texts will be indicated at the beginning of the course and made available on the Unistudium.
Educational objectives
The teaching aims to convey to the student:
1. Knowledge of methods manuscript's transmission, circulation and description and the printed book;
2. Knowledge of a critical edition, which was acquired on witnesses and on the editions of a text;
3. Knowledge of repertoires and tools;
4. Knowledge of the main issues related to the fenomenologia della copia, the fenomenologia dell'originale, the attribution, and the exegesis;
5. Knowledge of essential elements, the theory and practice of editing;
The main skills that allow to apply the acquired knowledge will be:
1. to recognize and to reflect the methods of processing, distribution and description of the manuscript and the printed book;
2. Know how to deal with a critical edition, reasoning on witnesses and issues;
3. Be able to identify and refer to the main tools;
4. Be able to identify the main issues related to the copy and the original, the attribution, and the exegesis;
5. To achieve greater agility in correlating the principles and methods to their implementation.
Prerequisites
In order to be able to understand and to know how to tackle the course, students must have a general knowledge of the history of the Italian language and the history of Italian literature; these are notions that the student should have already acquired in his/her school curriculum and perfected in the Laurea Triennale (undergraduate degrees). This precondition is valid both for attending and not attending students.
Teaching methods
The course is organized as follows:
- face-to-face lectures;
- seminar.
The teacher will provide students with the main concepts of discipline. During lectures will be considered the main examples of significant phenomena and problems that emerged from the texts. We would appreciate student's participation.

Attendance is recommended. Students who can not attend the course must agree the exam program directly with the professor.

Learning verification modality
The exam includes the final oral test consisting of a discussion-interview, in which the final assessment is expressed by a vote of thirty. The duration of the test is about thirty minutes, but varies depending on the performance of the test itself. The test aims at assuring the level of acquisition of specific content, methodology and bibliography of course. In the exam it is also appreciate the ability of critical evaluation.

Extended program
The course introduces the fundamentals of the discipline and then examines specific issues of philology and criticism, relating to a choice of texts from Italian literature.
The case studies are presented and discussed through the editions, the comments, the reference critical bibliography, the repertories and the paper and online research tools.
For the general part, the course includes the preparation of a manual of Italian philology.
