Lessons:
1) Introduction to the main problems in Latin literature of Late Antiquity (III-VIII c. AD)
2) Main topic of the course: "Literary cosmographies between classical culture and Christianity": readings and commentary in the Latin works “De natura rerum” of Isidore of Seville and Bede.

Practical trainings:
Characteristics of late Latin (readings and analysis of some chosen texts).

Educational objectives
The purposes of the course for the student are:

1) to acquire a critical knowledge of the main characters of the disciplinary domain;

2) to exercise the capacity for analysis and synthesis with regard to a monographic subject of a specialist level, through direct contact with Latin texts and by the reading of critical essays (Italian and one other European language are requested);

3) to improve knowledge of the Latin language, through contact with the proposed texts (during the lectures and in the practical trainings).
Prerequisites
Medium level knowledge of Latin language.
Knowledge of the history of Latin literature up to the second century AD included.
Teaching methods
Face – to – face lessons.

Face-to-face reading and translation exercises on a series of selected Latin texts, with analysis of late Latin language.

As required by the note of the Minister of University and Research relating to phase 3 COVID-19 (September 2020-January 2021), without prejudice to any other change communicated by the competent authorities, it will be possible to resort to blended teaching, i.e. in presence and telepresence simultaneously, with synchronous and/or asynchronous mode.

Even the oral exam, according to the aforementioned provisions, may take place in presence or in remote mode (through the Teams platform).

Learning verification modality
A single oral exam (not divisible).

As required by the note of the Minister of University and Research relating to phase 3 of the COVID-19 emergency (September 2020-January 2021), without prejudice to any other changes communicated by the competent authorities, the oral exam may take place in presence or in remotely.


Student will be asked about the following items:

a) main problems in Latin literature of Late Antiquity (III-VIII c. AD).

b) knowledge of the Late Latin: reading, translation and analysis of one of the texts examined during the hours of supplementary teaching.

c) about the main topic of the course: reading, translation and commentary of a text from the works of the authors included in the program (Isidore of Seville, Bede).


The purpose of the exam is to test:
- student's knowledge about the main topics of the discipline;
- student's competence in the main characters of the Latin language of Late Antiquity;
- student's ability to understand and expound with clarity a particular topic by translating a text from Latin and analyzing it in the light of the guidance carried out during the lessons and by the reading of the critical bibliography.

The oral exam will last an average of 30 minutes.
