| Extended program | The course aims to analyse the pragmatic aspects of language communication. The knowledge acquired in the description of the levels of grammar, will, therefore, be integrated through the consideration of language as a system aimed not only at 'saying,' but also at 'communicating.' The ability to interact through language involves a complex set of skills in addition to language competence. Being able to interact with language means being able to operate on complex textual units, to process and understand inferential plans, to recognize the link between text and context, and to identify function and purpose of each communicative act. These skills allow the understanding of the 'meaning of speakers' (as well as the meaning actually expressed). They also allow us to interpret both the figurative language (metaphors, ironies, etc.) and the many indirect linguistic acts we use in our daily conversation. The approach to be taken to analyse the skills underlying language use is that of experimental pragmatics. The relationship between pragmatics, mind and brain, the development of communication skills and disturbances in pragmatic abilities will also be introduced. |
