| Contents | LIS: operation, composition, and integration with other information systems, privacy and cybersecurity, the role of the TSLB in LIS management, and the evolution toward artificial intelligence. |

| Educational objectives | The course aims to provide an understanding of information systems and their importance; to understand their implications in laboratory workflow; to understand their main functions; to understand the most relevant regulations regarding privacy and information security; to understand the concepts of quality, security, and traceability; and to outline possible future prospects. By the end of the course, students will have a sufficient understanding of LIS, its importance, and its connections. They will be able to recognize any anomalies and identify appropriate remedial actions, and to work in a team to address realistic laboratory data management problems. |

| Extended program | Laboratory Information Systems: What they are, their components, and the differences between information systems and computer systems. LIS: What it is, its architecture and key components, an overview, laboratory workflow and computerized sample management, connection to other systems and their definition (HIS, RIS, EMR, EHR). Middleware: What it is, its function, and the HL7 language. Privacy and security in the analysis laboratory: the GDPR, code of ethics, professional secrecy, ISO 15189, ISO 9001, the importance of authentication, the audit trail, IT security measures in laboratory management systems, risks and vulnerabilities. Key figures in LIS management: the DEC, the CED, systems engineers, analysts, interface engineers, ICT managers, and the role of the TLSB. Future prospects for LIS: the evolution towards artificial intelligence, potential advantages, challenges, and limitations of AI. |
