Contents	The Pediatrics module addresses the main clinical and nursing care topics in neonatal and pediatric settings that are relevant to third-year nursing education. In particular, the course covers: neonatal life support according to the NLS 2025 guidelines; pediatric life support according to the PLS 2025 guidelines; blood sampling and strategies for the prevention of procedural pain; vascular access in pediatric and neonatal care; nursing care of the healthy newborn in the rooming-in setting; recognition and management of acute respiratory failure in childhood; the main pediatric respiratory diseases; recognition and nursing management of heart failure; the nursing approach to trauma; management of the most common pediatric emergencies; and vaccinations in nursing practice. The course integrates theoretical, organizational, and care-related aspects, with particular attention to the early recognition of clinical instability, patient safety, communication with the family, and the connection between lectures, clinical training, and professional practice.

Educational objectives	The Pediatrics module contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the Degree Programme in Nursing by providing students with knowledge and practical tools for nursing care of the newborn, infant, child, and family in the main clinical settings of neonatal and pediatric care. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the ability to recognize care needs, clinical priorities, and situations of instability, to collaborate safely in the management of urgent conditions, and to integrate technical, relational, and educational skills into professional practice. At the end of the module, the student will be expected to be able to: describe the basic principles of nursing care in neonatal and pediatric settings; recognize the main signs of respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological impairment in the newborn and child; know the essential elements of neonatal and pediatric life support according to the most recent guidelines; apply the basic principles of nursing management of procedural pain, blood sampling, and vascular access in pediatric patients; describe the fundamentals of nursing care for the healthy newborn in the rooming-in setting; recognize and frame the main pediatric emergencies and the most common respiratory diseases in childhood; collaborate in the nursing management of the child with trauma, respiratory failure, heart failure, or other acute conditions; understand the role of the nurse in vaccination practice, health education, and family support; use appropriate professional language focused on safety, nursing documentation, and continuity of care.
Prerequisites	Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, pharmacology, semiotics, and general nursing acquired during the degree programme is useful for understanding the module. Knowledge related to vital signs assessment, patient safety, and the fundamental principles of the care relationship is also helpful. For any formal prerequisites, reference should be made to the Degree Programme Regulations.
Teaching methods	Teaching is delivered through classroom lectures supported by slides, diagrams, tables, and materials prepared by the lecturer. The course integrates theoretical content with clinical and nursing reasoning and with links to neonatal and pediatric nursing practice settings. The course handout represents the main study tool and provides a connection between lectures, individual study, and clinical training. During the lessons, clinical-care examples, flow charts, and references to the most recent guidelines may be used in order to promote the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Students may request clarification or further explanations from the lecturer according to the arrangements communicated during the course or through institutional channels. The syllabus is the same for attending and non-attending students. Learning verification modality	Assessment of learning in the Pediatrics module is carried out by means of a structured written test consisting of multiple-choice questions, each with only one correct answer, delivered through the institutional LibreEOL platform. The test may be taken either in person or online, according to the organizational arrangements established for each examination session. The assessment is intended to verify the level of knowledge and understanding of the main contents of the module, the ability to recognize clinical and care-related problems in the neonatal and pediatric setting, to identify care priorities, and to correctly apply theoretical principles to nursing practice. The questions cover the topics taught during the course and included in the syllabus, with particular reference to nursing care in neonatal and pediatric settings, recognition of urgent conditions, patient safety, technical and care-related aspects, and the relationship with the child and family. Assessment takes into account the correctness of the answers provided and the student’s overall level of preparation with respect to the educational objectives of the module. The final mark is expressed out of thirty, in accordance with the regulations of the Degree Programme.

Blood sampling and prevention of procedural pain Pain in the newborn and child; principles of pain assessment; blood sampling procedures; non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain relief strategies; patient preparation and parental involvement; the nurse’s role in the prevention of procedural pain. Vascular access in pediatrics and neonatology General principles; indications; choice of device; nursing care during insertion and management; prevention, recognition, and management of the main complications. Nursing care of the healthy newborn in rooming-in Postnatal adaptation; clinical observation; promotion of breastfeeding; parental support; newborn safety; health education and continuity of care. The course is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and practical application in neonatal and pediatric settings.
