- The History and Historiography of Music courses at the The Conservatory of Music “Francesco Morlacchi” in Perugia are organized as monographic courses on various topics related to the history of Western music. They are usually taught by four different instructors, each focusing on a different subject. The course may focus on a composer, a repertoire, a genre, or a stylistic or aesthetic area. - Reference texts
- Guidelines regarding the reference texts will be provided during the course by each instructor. Students with disabilities and/or with SLD who, having completed regular accreditation through SOL, have obtained access to University services, can apply for the compensatory tools ensured by law (e.g. textbooks in digital format; teaching materials in accessible formats: presentations, handouts, workbooks, provided if necessary in advance of the lessons), for which consult https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa. - Educational objectives
- The course offers a unique opportunity within the three-year program to explore key aspects, authors, and works of the history of Western musical culture, while also developing a conscious listening approach aimed at recognizing stylistic and expressive features specific to particular periods and styles. By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the authors and works studied, the main musical genres covered, and the stylistic elements of the pieces listened to. They will be able to place musical works in their historical and aesthetic context, establishing connections with the history of music and broader cultural history. Through guided listening and analysis, students will develop the ability to use basic technical musical terminology to describe a piece or a section of it, thereby enhancing their communication skills. The planned activities will foster independent judgment in interpreting musical content and support the development of autonomous learning skills, including the use of audio, bibliographic, and digital resources.
- Prerequisites
- In order to fully understand the course, students should have general knowledge of the historical context and aspects of cultural life. Such knowledge is expected to have been acquired during their previous schooling. No specific musical background is required.
- Teaching methods
- Lectures will be held in the classroom and supported by multimedia tools (audio and video). The course may include practical exercises, conducted in class with the assistance of the instructor, aimed at recognizing the musical pieces listened to during the course (in preparation for the exam). - Learning verification modality
- The exam consists of a final test, which involves a discussion-interview covering the topics addressed during the course and further explored through the recommended texts. This test aims to assess the student’s level of knowledge, comprehension, and synthesis skills. The interview will also evaluate the student’s ability to communicate what they have learned with methodical accuracy, appropriate language, and clear exposition. The exam may also include, if applicable, recognition tests of musical excerpts listened to during the course.
