Educational objectives
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Knowledge: By the end of the course, students should have an in-depth knowledge of the history of the Brazilian language and be able to identify key events associated with specific historical periods Competences: C1+ level of the CEFR Capabilities: Contribute to the development of communication skills, application of their knowledge and refinement of learning practices. To mature an adequate capacity for critical judgement also in function of autonomous paths of research and in-depth study. The knowledge acquired at the end of the course can be applied by students in a future professional context both in school teaching following the qualification processes and in cultural institutions and literary publishing and translation.
Prerequisites
The student must have a B2 (Enhanced)/C1 level in Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese.
Teaching methods
The course consists of classroom lectures on all subjects of the program and will be held entirely in Portuguese. The teacher will encourage the participatory intervention by the students both with the request for any clarifications or with the expression of personal opinions. The project will promote active reception of the course content which, in turn, allow a weighted acquisition of the contents.
Other information
During the course, several activities will take place such as lectures, panel discussions and film screenings in Portuguese on the course topics and other issues related to the Portuguese and Brazilian cultures. Students should report to the professor for the full schedule of these activities at the beginning of the first and second semesters. Learning verification modality
The exam consists of an oral interview lasting about half an hour with an open stimulus, with an open answer on the covered topics and it will be aimed at verifying both the understanding and the ability to apply the knowledge discussed during the course. The final evaluation of the oral examination will be calculated in thirtieths. Students who have attended at least 70 per cent of the lectures will be given the opportunity to take the exemption from some exams in seminar form. Students with disabilities and / or with DSA: for the modality of carrying out the verification tests, students can take advantage of inclusive technologies, compensatory tools and dispensatory measures provided for by the legislation. Technologies, tools and measures must be requested and agreed with the teacher well in advance of the tests. Extended program
The course aims to provide an overview of the history of Brazilian Portuguese, starting from its early formation from Galician-Portuguese. To this end, key historical periods will be discussed, along with representative texts and figures from Galician, European Portuguese, and Brazilian Portuguese. The objective is to understand how Brazilian Portuguese developed between the 16th and 18th centuries, prior to the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil. After this event, the direction of linguistic evolution changed, and external influences began to have a more noticeable impact. The course will analyze the influence of other languages on Brazilian Portuguese in the 19th century, as well as its lexicographic consolidation. It will then move into the 20th century, presenting the nationalization policies that influenced the language. The entire course will follow the proposed bibliography, accompanied by online content from the website of the Museum of the Portuguese Language, based in São Paulo.
